The Freelander 8 is confirmed for New Zealand in 2027 as the first vehicle from the new Chery-JLR Freelander brand. No exact launch date, New Zealand price or local specification has been announced, so the overseas model details should not be treated as the version buyers here will receive.
When is the Freelander 8 coming to New Zealand?
Freelander is due to launch in New Zealand in 2027, with the Freelander 8 leading the local range. The year and market are confirmed, but there is no announced month, quarter or on-sale date. The brand’s international roadmap places Australia and New Zealand among its priority right-hand-drive markets, after an initial focus on the Middle East; it does not provide a more precise New Zealand timetable. FREELANDER’s international roadmap was published on 1 October 2026.
What is the Freelander brand?
Freelander is a standalone brand created through the relationship between JLR and Chery. Under a collaboration plan announced on 19 June 2024, JLR licensed the Freelander name to CJLR, their 50:50 joint venture. The plan called for a vehicle portfolio based on Chery electric-vehicle architecture and manufactured at Changshu. JLR described the revived brand as independent of both its modern-luxury brand portfolio and Chery’s existing range. It is therefore not simply a new Land Rover model. JLR’s announcement of the collaboration provides the original context.

What is known about the Freelander 8?
The Freelander 8 is described as a large, electrified SUV, with five- and six-seat configurations and battery-electric, plug-in hybrid and range-extender powertrain options reported for the vehicle. Which body or powertrain versions, if any, will be offered in New Zealand has not been confirmed.

CarExpert NZ reports Chinese regulatory dimensions of up to 5,185 mm long, 2,050 mm wide and 1,898 mm tall, with a 3,040 mm wheelbase. Those are China-related figures, not confirmed New Zealand specifications. The same report lists previously revealed equipment such as twin-chamber air suspension, an electronic limited-slip differential, roof-mounted LiDAR and driver-assistance technology. It also describes large dashboard displays and, on the six-seat version, second-row captain’s chairs. None of those details establishes the equipment of a New Zealand model.
What has not been announced for New Zealand?
- Price: no New Zealand pricing has been announced.
- Local specification: the New Zealand powertrain mix, equipment, dimensions and performance are not confirmed.
- Exact timing: the confirmed timing is 2027, without a launch month or on-sale date.
- Dealers and aftersales: the brand says it expects to work with existing local dealerships and provide dedicated sales, service and aftersales training. Dealer appointments and local service or warranty arrangements have not been announced.
Until those details are released, China-market equipment, performance figures and regulatory data cannot establish what New Zealand buyers will be able to order. Likewise, without local pricing and specifications, there is not enough confirmed information for a meaningful New Zealand buyer comparison with other large SUVs.

What the launch means for local buyers
The key confirmed detail is the arrival year: New Zealand is on the planned rollout map, and the Freelander 8 is to be the brand’s first local model.
