Choose freediving gear for your face, feet, local water conditions, and training—not by a universal “best” list. Start with a mask that seals comfortably, select fins you can use efficiently, match suit thickness to temperature and time in the water, and use a buoy and line as part of trained, buddy-supervised open-water practice. If you are new, check what your course supplies or can rent before buying a full kit.

What freediving gear will I need?

For basic training, the core kit is a mask, snorkel, fins, an exposure suit appropriate to the conditions, and—where required for open-water line training—a buoy and line. A weight belt and weights may also be used, but their adjustment is a safety decision, not a shopping guess.

Course requirements differ. For its Level 1 course, Freediving Instructors International (FII) lists a mask, basic snorkel, full-length wetsuit, snorkel fins or long blades, weight belt and small weights, and a waterproof timing device. FII says freediving-specific gear is not required for that course, although it is preferred, especially a wetsuit; an instructor may be able to arrange rental if asked in advance. Check with your own provider because inclusions and rental availability vary by place and course. FII Level 1 equipment guidance

How do I choose a freediving mask?

Look for a comfortable seal and low internal volume. A low-volume mask needs less air to equalize as pressure changes during descent; a low profile can also be more hydrodynamic, according to Divers Alert Network (DAN). These advantages do not compensate for a poor fit: a mask that leaks or presses uncomfortably is the wrong choice regardless of its advertised volume. DAN’s freediving gear overview

  2. Inhale gently through your nose and let go of the mask.
  3. Check whether suction holds it in place while you shake your head.

This fit check is recommended by the British Freediving Association. Also check that you can pinch the nose pocket to equalize and that the lenses are tempered or safety glass. British Freediving Association equipment guidance

How do I choose freediving fins?

Long-blade fins are designed for an efficient, slower kick. Fit the foot pocket to your foot, including any socks you expect to wear, then consider blade material and stiffness in light of your body, fitness, activity, and budget. Stiffer is not automatically better.

DAN describes these general material trade-offs, not a ranking for every diver or model. The British Freediving Association cites 90–110 cm as a commonly agreed fin length and notes that softer, flexible blades can be less tiring. Treat that length as its guidance, not a regulation or universal sizing prescription. DAN fin material guidance; British Freediving Association fin guidance

What do a safety buoy, line, and lanyard do?

In open-water training, a buoy marks divers for boats and provides a surface rest point. A line hanging from it gives a reference for descent and ascent. A lanyard clips a diver to the line during deeper line training; the British Freediving Association describes it as safety equipment for line diving, and competition rules can specify lanyard requirements. These items belong within appropriate training and buddy-supervised safety procedures. A buoy, line, or lanyard does not make solo breath-hold diving safe. PADI identifies safety rules and buddy procedures as part of freediving course content. PADI freediving FAQ

How should I choose a weight belt and weights?

A rubber or elastic belt can stay snug as a wetsuit compresses, but the correct amount of weight depends on the diver, suit, and depth. Have an instructor set and check the weight rather than copying another diver or using a generic prescription. Freedive Crete warns that too much weight is a real safety problem, and DAN reports that over-weighting has caused freediving fatalities. Freedive Crete weight guidance; DAN on over-weighting

Should I buy, rent, or wait until after my course?

Ask your instructor what is included and whether suitable equipment can be rented before spending on a complete setup. PADI’s practical advice is to choose for fit, preference, and budget: “There is no “best gear,” but there is the best gear for you.” Local professionals can help match equipment to those needs. PADI freediving FAQ

If you are buying gradually, Freedive Crete suggests starting with a mask, then a simple snorkel and socks, trying fins before settling on stiffness, and delaying a wetsuit decision until you know where and when you will dive. This is provider advice from Plakias, Crete—not a universal purchase order. Freedive Crete gear advice
