Use a YouTube hashtag generator to brainstorm a short list of relevant tags—not to promise more views. Check every suggestion against the video, choose tags that fit its topic and audience, and use YouTube Analytics to learn which search terms viewers actually use.
What a YouTube hashtag generator can—and cannot—do
A generator turns a video topic, audience, format, and language into hashtag ideas you can review. It can speed up brainstorming for a standard video or a Short, but YouTube does not say hashtags guarantee views, virality, higher rankings, or preferential treatment by its recommendation system. Its official guidance describes hashtags as a way to connect videos and help viewers find related content: YouTube Help: Find videos using hashtags.
Use generated suggestions as candidates, not as a ready-to-publish bundle. A tag is useful only if it accurately describes the video and makes sense for the people you want to reach.

How do I find hashtags for my YouTube video?
- Describe the video precisely. Note its main subject, intended audience, format, and language. For example, a Short demonstrating a phone camera setting is more specific than “technology.”
- Generate topic-specific candidates. Enter that description into a generator and treat the results as a brainstorming list. You can also type
#in YouTube’s title or description field: YouTube may suggest popular hashtags, or you can create a relevant one yourself. See YouTube Help: Find playlists and videos using hashtags. - Check each suggestion against the video. Keep a hashtag only if the video’s visible or audible content genuinely supports it. Reject unrelated trending terms, vague tags with no meaningful connection, misspellings, and duplicates.
- Make the format valid. Hashtags cannot contain spaces. Join a multiword phrase into one string, such as
#YouTubeTips, rather than writing it with spaces. - Choose a small, relevant set. There is no need to maximize the count. Prefer tags that clearly describe the video over a longer list of loosely related terms.
- Publish, then learn from actual audience behavior. Review YouTube Analytics’ “How viewers find your” report for search terms viewers use. Where do I put hashtags on a YouTube video?
Add hashtags in the video title or description. As you type a hashtag in either field, YouTube may offer popular suggestions; select one or write your own relevant tag. Hashtags link to results pages for videos using the same hashtag. Viewers can search for a hashtag, select one shown on a video, or find trending hashtags through Explore, as described in YouTube Help: Find videos using hashtags.
YouTube may display up to three hashtags it considers most engaging from a video’s description by its title. That display behavior is not a reason to add unrelated tags: the hashtags still need to fit the video. YouTube’s insertion and display guidance is in Find playlists and videos using hashtags.
How many hashtags should I use on YouTube?
Use only the hashtags that are relevant to the video; YouTube does not establish a target number that will improve views. There is, however, a firm platform limit: if a video has more than 60 hashtags, YouTube ignores all of them. This is a YouTube rule, not a study finding. Hashtags give viewers ways to find videos associated with a topic, but YouTube’s cited guidance does not quantify how many views they add or promise that using them will increase reach. A generator cannot establish that a hashtag will cause a video to be recommended or perform better.

Do not confuse hashtags with the separate video tags field in YouTube Studio. YouTube says titles, thumbnails, and descriptions matter more for discovery than ordinary video tags, which play a minimal role except when a video’s subject is commonly misspelled. - Use YouTube’s hashtag suggestions while entering a hashtag in the title or description when you want to see the platform’s suggested popular hashtags. Suggestions still need a relevance check.
- Use Analytics Research or Keyword Planner to investigate keywords and synonyms, and use the “How viewers find your” report to see search terms associated with your audience. These are keyword-research routes, not hashtag-generation guarantees.
Across all three approaches, relevance to the actual video matters more than how popular or numerous a tag appears to be.
