To resize an image for X, first choose where it will appear: an ordinary post, a profile photo, a header, or a paid ad. For a single-photo post, X says standard aspect ratios from 2:1 through 3:4 display in full; use the post composer preview to check the crop. For profile images and headers, follow X’s separate 400 × 400 px and 1500 × 500 px recommendations.
How to resize an image for X
- Choose the surface. Decide whether the image is for a post, profile photo, header, or paid ad. Each has different sizing guidance.
- Set the aspect ratio or dimensions. Crop or fit the image to the intended shape. Preserve its proportions rather than stretching it to fill a frame.
- Check the crop. Keep important text, faces, and logos away from the edges, then review the image in X’s composer or profile preview.
- Export a supported file. Choose an accepted image format and keep the file within the applicable upload limit.
- Post with an image description. Add a concise description so people using assistive technology can understand the image.
A free tool can make the crop or resize easier, but its presets and file limits are the tool provider’s specifications, not guarantees about what X will accept or display.
Free X image resizers: which one to use

These options are not a head-to-head performance ranking. Choose based on whether you need a surface-specific preset, design templates, or simple resizing; verify current free-use limits on the provider’s page.
Image sizes for X posts, profile photos, and headers

There is no single official pixel dimension in X’s cited organic-post guidance for every image. Third-party “ideal” sizes differ: Canva recommends 1024 × 512 px, while Buffer recommends 1600 × 900 px. Those are tool-provider recommendations, not X requirements, and neither should replace X’s full-display aspect-ratio guidance and composer preview.

Paid X ads use separate image specifications
Do not use an ad creative specification as a universal size for ordinary posts. X’s ad guidance varies by product and placement and includes these ratios and dimensions:

Check the current specification for the exact ad product and placement before exporting; the smaller dimensions listed for 1:1 and 1.91:1 apply to certain image ads, not every placement.

Formats and file-size limits
X’s photo-posting help lists GIF, JPEG, and PNG formats and says photos can be up to 5 MB. Its indexed guidance gives different animated GIF limits by client: up to 5 MB on mobile and 15 MB on web. X also says uploaded photos are scaled for expanded display and the gallery. Limits may vary by client or media type, so consult the current X upload guidance if a file is rejected.
Tool limits are separate from platform limits: Adobe Express lists JPG, PNG, or WebP under 40 MB, while Buffer lists JPEG, PNG, or WebP up to 10 MB. A file that a resizer accepts may still exceed X’s upload limit or use a format X does not list for photo posts.

Prevent cropping and preserve image quality
- Crop or pad; do not stretch. Stretching changes the proportions of people and objects. Crop to focus the image, or add padding when retaining the full frame matters more.
- Protect edge content. Keep key details away from boundaries, especially in headers, which can be cropped differently across displays.
- Preview the actual destination. A resizer’s canvas shows the exported file; X’s composer or profile preview shows how it is likely to appear on the platform.
- Keep an original copy. Save the source image before cropping or overwriting it so you can make a different version for another surface.
- Add an image description. X supports image descriptions for accessibility and added context. In the post composer, use the image description option for the uploaded image and write a concise account of its meaningful content.
X’s help center says image descriptions make the platform accessible to people with disabilities. A description should convey information that matters in context rather than merely repeat the post text.
