The most dependable free workflow is to open the legacy .doc file in LibreOffice Writer, export it as a PDF, and render the PDF pages as PNG images. This preserves the document’s page layout better than trying to extract text or embedded images. LibreOffice is free and open source, Writer supports Microsoft Word 97–2003 DOC files, and its PDF export supports page ranges. A PDF-to-image step is still required for a reliable multi-page conversion.
Keep two tasks separate: converting every document page into PNG files is not the same as extracting a photograph or graphic that is embedded inside the DOC. The instructions below address full-page conversion first, then cover direct export, online infrastructure, quality choices, privacy, troubleshooting, and automation decisions.
Choose the right kind of conversion
Before installing anything, decide what “DOC to PNG” means for your project:

This is the usual requirement for previews, image-based sharing, or systems that accept images but not Word files.
- Extract an embedded image: only a picture already placed in the document is saved. This does not preserve surrounding text, headers, tables, or page breaks.
- Make one long image: several pages are stitched vertically. This can be convenient for a web preview but is harder to read and may create a very large file.
The free local route below creates one PNG per page. You can combine or resize those files afterward if your destination requires a different shape.

Method 1: LibreOffice Writer, PDF, then PNG
This is the best general-purpose method when you can install desktop software and the document should stay on your computer. The LibreOffice project describes its suite as free and open source. Writer lists Microsoft Word 97–2003 .doc among its supported formats, and its export workflow can create a PDF from the opened document.
Step 1: Install LibreOffice and make a working copy
- Install LibreOffice from the official LibreOffice website for your operating system.
- Duplicate the original DOC before editing or converting it. Keep the original unchanged so you can retry with different rendering settings.
- Open the copy in Writer. If a format warning appears, choose the option that keeps the document in its original DOC format while you inspect it.
Step 2: Check the layout before exporting
Look through every page for substituted fonts, shifted tables, missing images, changed line wrapping, and altered page breaks. A DOC can render differently in LibreOffice than in the version of Word that created it. If the layout is unacceptable, install the missing fonts or test the file in the authoring application before continuing.
Step 3: Export selected pages or the whole document to PDF
- In Writer, select File > Export As > Export as PDF.
- In the PDF options dialog, choose all pages or enter a page range. This is useful when you need only pages 2–4 rather than the entire document.
- Choose a resolution appropriate to the final use. Higher output resolution improves detail but increases file size; lower resolution creates smaller files but can make small text unreadable.
- Save the PDF in a new folder and open it once to confirm that the page count and layout are correct.
Step 4: Render each PDF page as a PNG
Use any PDF renderer or image-conversion utility available for your operating system. The researched LibreOffice instructions establish the DOC-to-PDF step; a separate renderer is needed to rasterize the PDF pages. Set the renderer to output one PNG per page and choose a target resolution or pixel size.
A practical starting point is 150–200 DPI for screen previews and 300 DPI when printed text must remain sharp. These are working choices rather than guarantees: the correct value depends on page size, font size, and how the PNG will be consumed. Inspect a representative page at 100% zoom before converting the entire file.
Step 5: Inspect and name the PNG files
- Open several pages, including the first, last, and any page with tables or images.
- Check that no content is clipped at the edges and that transparent areas or backgrounds look as expected.
- Use predictable names such as
report-001.png,report-002.png, and so on. - Keep the PDF as an intermediate archive. It lets you rerender at another size without reopening the DOC.
Can LibreOffice export DOC directly to PNG?
LibreOffice help lists a Writer PNG export filter and parameters for pixel width and height. That indicates that direct PNG export may be available in some versions or document contexts, but the documented examples do not demonstrate the exact DOC-to-PNG workflow. Treat it as version- and file-dependent rather than as the universal method.
- Open a copy of the DOC in Writer.
- Try File > Export As and look for a PNG image option.
- If PNG is offered, set the pixel width and height, export one test page, and compare it with the PDF route.
- If the option is absent, exports only one object, or produces an unexpected canvas, return to DOC-to-PDF and render the PDF pages.
Do not delete the original until the test PNGs have been checked. Direct export behavior can change with the installed LibreOffice version, document contents, and whether the file is being handled as a Writer page or a graphic object.

Quality, dimensions, and file-size decisions

PNG is lossless, so increasing dimensions does not recover detail that was missing in the original DOC or lost during rendering. Oversized pages can consume substantial storage and memory. Render one page first, measure its dimensions and file size, and then scale the batch decision accordingly.

The LibreOffice route processes the document locally after installation. That avoids uploading confidential contracts, résumés, forms, or customer data to a hosted converter. You still need to consider backups, temporary files, cloud-synced folders, and operating-system indexing: save sensitive work in a controlled directory and remove intermediate files according to your organization’s policy.
An online conversion endpoint can be convenient when software installation is blocked, but the existence of an API that accepts files and names PNG or PDF output does not establish that a particular consumer website is free, private, or available. Before uploading a document, read the provider’s current retention, deletion, encryption, file-size, and pricing terms.
LibreOffice Online and developer workflows
LibreOffice Online project documentation describes an HTTP POST conversion endpoint and identifies PNG and PDF as possible output formats. That is developer-facing infrastructure, not proof of a public, no-cost converter for end users. You would need an appropriately configured LibreOffice Online deployment or a service built on it, plus authentication, storage, size limits, and cleanup controls.

Why Word for the web is not a one-step DOC-to-PNG solution
Microsoft’s support guidance says a legacy DOC opens view-only in Word for the web. Choosing Convert creates a DOCX copy for editing. That guidance does not establish a direct DOC-to-PNG export workflow, so Word for the web should not be presented as a one-click PNG converter. If you use it, treat conversion to DOCX as a separate compatibility step and use a documented image-rendering method afterward.

Extract an embedded picture instead of rendering pages
If you only need a photo or logo already inside the DOC, full-page rendering is unnecessary. Open the document in Writer or Word, select the picture, and use the application’s picture-saving command if available. Compare the saved image with the original: selecting a picture can preserve its source dimensions, while copying and pasting may resample it. This route will not include captions, text, or page layout.
Common problems and fixes
The DOC opens with broken formatting
Cause: missing fonts, unsupported Word features, or differences between word processors. Fix: install the required fonts, compare the copy with the original in the authoring application, and export only after page breaks and tables are correct.
The PDF looks right but PNG text is blurry
Cause: the rasterizer used too few pixels for the page or the image was later resized. Fix: rerender at a higher DPI or larger pixel width, avoid repeated resampling, and inspect at 100% zoom.
Only one page was created
Cause: a direct image export captured a selected object or a single canvas rather than the document’s pages. Fix: export the complete document to PDF and render every PDF page separately.
Images or fonts are missing
Cause: linked assets were unavailable or the font was not installed. Fix: embed or relink images where possible, install permitted fonts, and reopen the DOC before exporting.
The PNG files are too large
Cause: unnecessarily high dimensions, many pages, or detailed photographic content. Fix: lower the target DPI or width for screen use, render only required pages, and consider whether your destination accepts a more compact format.

Page edges are clipped
Cause: a renderer’s crop setting, incorrect page size, or later image resizing. Fix: preserve the PDF’s page box, disable aggressive cropping, and compare the PNG dimensions with the PDF page size.

The conversion stops or hangs
Cause: a damaged DOC, unusually complex objects, or insufficient memory. Fix: test a page-limited copy, remove problematic objects in the authoring application, split a large job into smaller files, and retain the last successful intermediate PDF.
When to automate
Automation is worthwhile when the same conversion happens repeatedly, pages must be generated on a schedule, or a team needs consistent naming and dimensions. Start with a small fixture set containing plain text, tables, images, unusual fonts, and a multi-page layout. Compare generated PNGs against approved reference images after every LibreOffice or renderer upgrade.
For occasional files, the desktop workflow is usually safer and easier to audit. For large batches, a controlled local service or self-hosted LibreOffice Online deployment can remove repetitive clicks, but it adds queueing, isolation, timeout, storage, and security responsibilities.
