Choose based on the game you want to watch, not whether a service is labeled free or paid. Free streaming can work if you’re flexible about events and don’t mind ads. A paid subscription may unlock a specific league or game, but no single service carries every sport or every game. Rights, your location, the plan tier, and blackout rules determine what you can actually watch.
Free vs. paid sports streaming at a glance
| Option | Cost model | Live-game access | Ads | Location restrictions |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free ad-supported streaming, such as Tubi | No subscription fee for the service; supported by advertising. | Do not assume a particular live game is included. Confirm the event on the service’s current schedule. Tubi describes its service as free and legal. | Advertising breaks fund the service. | Availability of a specific event can depend on its rights and market; verify before relying on it. |
| Paid streaming services | Subscription fees vary by service and plan. For example, Peacock lists Premium at $12.99 per month or $129.99 per year on its sports page, accessed October 3, 2026. | Selected sports and events, not every game. Peacock promotes Sunday Night Football and Premier League; other services carry different rights. | Paid does not necessarily mean ad-free during live sports. Peacock says its live events have commercial breaks, including on Premium Plus. | Rights, local-market rules, and blackouts can affect access. Check the league’s current guidance and the event’s official listing. |
| Over-the-air TV with an antenna | No streaming subscription; an antenna is a separate equipment purchase. | Can receive sports carried by local broadcast stations where the signal is available. It does not provide streaming-only events. | Broadcast advertising may appear during games. | Depends on local channel coverage, distance, terrain, and reception. The FCC document discusses preserving access to live sports through free over-the-air television. |
Can you watch live sports for free?
Sometimes. Free ad-supported services offer a no-subscription way to stream their available content, but a free service’s existence does not mean it has the live rights to the game you want. Tubi says its service is free and legal and is funded by advertising; that statement does not establish that a particular live event is available there.
For local games, an antenna may also receive a broadcast from a nearby station. That is free over-the-air television, not streaming, and whether it works depends on local coverage and reception. It will not unlock an event that is available only through a streaming service.
When is paying for a sports streaming service worth it?
Pay when a service currently carries the specific event or competition you care about and its price makes sense for how often you will watch. A service can have a strong sports lineup without carrying your team’s next game. For example, Peacock promotes live Sunday Night Football and Premier League coverage, while Paramount+ advertises live sports including the English Football League. Those examples describe selected programming, not universal access to every game or every sports property. Check the current event listing and the plan terms on the Peacock sports page and Paramount+ site.

Compare the full cost of the subscriptions needed for your games, not just one service’s monthly price against another’s. Peacock’s sports page lists Premium at $12.99 per month or $129.99 per year as of October 3, 2026; prices and lineups can change. Also check whether a live event includes commercial breaks: Peacock says live events have regular breaks even on Premium Plus.
How to check whether a service carries your game
- Identify the event. Write down the sport, league, team, and exact game date and time. A league’s general availability is not proof that every game is included.
- Find the current rights holder. Check the league’s official schedule or viewing guide and the broadcaster’s event listing. Rights can differ between games in the same league.
- Check your location. Confirm that the service carries the game in your market and review local blackout rules. The NFL’s viewing guidance lists multiple ways to watch regular-season games and notes that broadcast rights and blackout restrictions can affect availability.
- Verify the plan tier and access route. Check whether the event is included in the plan you intend to buy, or whether access requires an affiliated TV or video subscription. ESPN says access to network programming can depend on a subscription through an affiliated video provider, while also describing ESPN Select and Unlimited options. Check the ESPN access information and the event’s own listing.
- Add the total cost. Include every subscription required to watch the games you want, and compare recurring prices and billing periods. Do not treat a single service’s advertised price as the full cost if another subscription is required.
- Check ads and equipment. Review whether live coverage includes commercial breaks, and make sure your television, streaming device, or phone supports the service’s app. For antenna viewing, check local station coverage and likely reception separately.
Which option fits your viewing habits?
- Choose free streaming if you are open to whatever sports content is available, want to avoid a subscription, and accept advertising. Confirm that the event you care about is actually listed.
- Choose a paid service if it has current rights to a specific game or competition you plan to watch and the total cost is worthwhile to you. Recheck the plan and local availability before subscribing.
- Consider an antenna if the game is carried by a local broadcast station and reception at your home is adequate. It is a separate over-the-air option, not a substitute for streaming-exclusive access.
Can you watch your team without cable?
Often, but the route depends on the team, game, market, and rights holder. Some games may be available through a streaming service, some through a local broadcast station that an antenna can receive, and others through a different authorized provider. For NFL games, the league lists multiple viewing routes and warns that blackouts and broadcast rights can affect access; check the current NFL guidance for the game and your location.
