In Gizmodo’s October 2026 comparison, Windscribe Free and PrivadoVPN Free opened BBC iPlayer through UK servers; Hide.me Free was blocked, and Proton VPN Free had no UK server. These are dated test results, not guarantees: streaming services can block VPN server addresses, so access may change.
Which free VPNs opened BBC iPlayer in the reported tests?
The comparison below separates observed access from free-plan details. “Opened” describes a reviewer’s test, not a continuing promise from the VPN provider.
| Service | Reported iPlayer result | Free UK location and data | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windscribe Free | Opened iPlayer in Gizmodo’s October 2026 comparison; TechRadar also reported successful access. | UK server; 10 GB per month, as reported by Gizmodo in October 2026. | Windscribe says iPlayer may block the IP address in use, so a successful test may not hold for every server or session. |
| PrivadoVPN Free | Opened iPlayer in Gizmodo’s October 2026 comparison; Tom’s Guide also reported successful access. | UK server; 10 GB per month, as reported by Gizmodo in October 2026. Tom’s Guide describes the free servers as limited. | Do not treat the test as evidence that every session or server will keep working. |
| Proton VPN Free | Gizmodo reported no UK location on the free tier. | No free UK server for this use; the free plan’s unlimited data does not provide one. | Proton’s iPlayer instructions direct users to a paid UK Plus server and say iPlayer may not always work. |
| Hide.me Free | Blocked in Gizmodo’s October 2026 test. | UK server; unlimited data, as reported by Gizmodo. | That is one dated test, not proof of permanent failure. |
Sources: Gizmodo, TechRadar, and Tom’s Guide. A UK server by itself does not ensure iPlayer will work: Hide.me had a UK location but was blocked in the cited comparison.
What should you choose for a free UK connection?
For a recent reported iPlayer success
Windscribe Free and PrivadoVPN Free are the two options in this evidence set with recent reported success, and both were reported to offer 10 GB monthly. Choose between them based on your needs and be prepared for access to change; the available tests do not establish that one will work more reliably over time.

If unlimited free data is your priority
Proton VPN Free and Hide.me Free were reported to have unlimited data, but they illustrate why data allowance is not enough to judge this use. Proton’s free tier lacks a UK server, while Hide.me’s UK server was blocked in Gizmodo’s test.
Do not use speed measurements as playback promises
Gizmodo measured 182.21 Mbps for Windscribe’s free UK server and 180.04 Mbps for PrivadoVPN’s free UK server in its October 2026 comparison. Those are reviewer measurements, not guarantees of your connection speed, stream quality, or access to iPlayer.

Why can a VPN that worked stop opening iPlayer?
Streaming services can block VPN server IP addresses. Windscribe says iPlayer may block the address in use and that its blocklist changes, so a result from a review—or a session that worked yesterday—cannot establish future availability.
If Windscribe stops connecting to iPlayer, the provider suggests trying another UK server, clearing cookies and cache, or switching between the browser and app. These are Windscribe’s troubleshooting suggestions, not independently verified fixes.

Yes. TV Licensing says a TV Licence is required to use BBC iPlayer on any device, including when using a VPN. Check the official TV Licensing guidance on iPlayer and the TV Licence for the applicable rules.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can Proton VPN Free be used for iPlayer?
Proton’s official instructions say to connect to a UK Plus server; a Free user must upgrade to use that option, and the provider warns that iPlayer may not always work. Its instructions therefore describe a paid route, not a Proton VPN Free UK-server option for this task. See Proton VPN’s BBC iPlayer instructions.
