For TikTok carousel ads, use the dimensions TikTok for Business lists for the selected format: 1200 × 628 px horizontal, 640 × 640 px square, or 720 × 1280 px vertical. For a video cover, Buffer recommends 1080 × 1920 px. These are specifications for different surfaces—not universal requirements for every TikTok image.
To resize an image, choose the TikTok surface first, then set its dimensions in an image editor or use Buffer’s browser-based resizer. The guide below distinguishes official ad specifications from third-party recommendations and explains what is not established for organic photo posts.
Which size should you use for a TikTok image?
There is no single image size that applies to every TikTok surface. TikTok for Business lists three standard image resolutions for carousel ads, while Buffer gives a separate recommendation for video covers. A profile image and an organic photo post are different cases.

TikTok for Business lists the carousel ad sizes in its Image Ads | Carousel Ads Playbook. The ≤100 KB figure is presented as a suggestion in that playbook, not as a general TikTok upload limit. Buffer’s TikTok image-resizer page recommends 1080 × 1920 px for a video cover. Media Cheat Sheet’s TikTok specs guide, reviewed in August 2026, presents 200 × 200 px as a recommended profile canvas, not a published TikTok requirement.

How to resize an image for TikTok
- Identify the destination. Decide whether the image is for a carousel ad, video cover, profile image, or organic photo post. Do not apply ad dimensions to an organic post by default.
- Choose the matching dimensions. For carousel ads, select horizontal 1200 × 628, square 640 × 640, or vertical 720 × 1280 px from TikTok for Business’s playbook. For a video cover, Buffer recommends 1080 × 1920 px. For a profile image, 200 × 200 px is a third-party canvas recommendation only.
- Resize or crop in an editor. Enter the target width and height, and keep the important subject inside the crop. If the source image has a different shape, cropping may remove edges; expanding the canvas instead can leave blank space.
- Export in a suitable format. TikTok for Business lists JPG/JPEG and PNG for carousel ads. Its playbook suggests a file size of 100 KB or less; check the ad upload flow for current acceptance. The cited material does not establish formats or a file-size cap for organic photo posts.
- Preview on TikTok before publishing. Check the in-app or ad-preview crop and adjust if text, faces, or other important details are cut off. For organic photo posts, use TikTok’s current upload interface to confirm accepted dimensions and limits.
Resize with Buffer’s free online tool
Buffer offers an in-browser image resizer at buffer.com/free-tools/image-resizer/tiktok. Buffer says resizing happens on the user’s device and that images are not uploaded to or stored on Buffer’s servers. That is Buffer’s own privacy statement, not an independently verified finding. Buffer also says users can resize up to five images without an account and need a free Buffer account to continue; availability and offer terms may change.
- Open Buffer’s TikTok image-resizer page and select or upload the image in the browser.
- Choose the needed dimensions or aspect ratio for the destination surface.
- Adjust the crop so the key content remains visible, then download the resized image.
- Upload the result to the relevant TikTok surface and inspect its preview before posting.
What is not confirmed for organic TikTok photo posts?
The cited official TikTok for Business playbook covers carousel advertising, not organic photo posts. The sources here do not establish current official organic photo-post dimensions, accepted formats, or upload-size limits. If you are publishing an ordinary photo post, treat any dimension you find elsewhere as a recommendation unless TikTok itself specifies it in the current upload flow or official documentation.

Likewise, a suggested ad file size is not proof of a universal limit, and a third-party profile canvas does not establish TikTok’s minimum or maximum profile-image dimensions. Confirm requirements in the relevant TikTok upload surface rather than assuming one image spec applies across the app.
