For ongoing social media work without a subscription, start with the tools built for the networks you use: Meta Business Suite for a Facebook-and-Instagram-focused workflow, or Buffer’s documented free plan if you need a scheduler across multiple networks. Canva can help you design and schedule posts, but scheduling access depends on your plan and account setup. Hootsuite’s plan information describes a free trial, not a continuing free plan. Check live vendor pages before committing: free-plan limits and publishing features can change.

Which free social media marketing tool should you choose?

Choose by the work you need done, not by the number of features on a product page. A scheduler helps plan and publish posts; a design tool helps create visuals; a broader management suite may also handle analytics, engagement, reporting, or team approvals. The sources cited here are vendor documentation or product comparisons, not independent hands-on tests.

  • Facebook and Instagram only: Meta Business Suite is a potential starting point if your strategy is limited to those networks. The available source is a 2026 Later comparison, not Meta documentation, so verify current eligibility and features with Meta before relying on a specific capability.
  • Scheduling across several networks: Buffer documents an ongoing Free plan. Its pricing page search result identifies a three-channel limit, but limits and plan features can change; confirm the live pricing and feature pages before setting up your workflow.
  • Design plus scheduling: Canva combines a content planner with design tools, but scheduling availability is not uniformly free, and Instagram scheduling has specific account requirements.
  • Considering Hootsuite or Later: Hootsuite’s plans page describes paid plans and a free trial. Later’s publishing and account features depend on its plan. Check their current pages rather than treating trial access as free-forever access.

What “free” means for each option

Tool What the cited information establishes What to verify
Meta Business Suite A 2026 Later comparison describes it as a free option for a strategy limited to Facebook and Instagram. Current features, account eligibility, and publishing behavior with Meta. The cited source does not establish exact limits.
Buffer Buffer’s pricing and support pages document a Free plan alongside paid plans. Live channel cap, post queue limits, analytics, engagement, and team features. The pricing-page search result says channels can be locked after exceeding the Free plan’s three-channel limit.
Canva Canva documents its Content Planner and scheduling options; access varies by plan and platform. Whether your plan and account types support the specific platform and post format you need.
Hootsuite The plans page describes paid plans and a free trial; the Standard page describes social management features. Current trial terms, paid-plan features, and availability. A trial is not a continuing free plan.
Later Its pricing page lists plan-dependent publishing and account features. Current plan names, limits, and which features remain available without payment.

What each tool is suited to

Meta Business Suite for a Facebook-and-Instagram workflow

If those are your only publishing destinations, Meta Business Suite may be a simpler starting point than adding a separate scheduler. The evidence available here supports it as a candidate, but does not establish its exact current feature set or eligibility. Check Meta’s own current documentation for the tasks you intend to perform, especially scheduling, account connections, and reporting.

Buffer for multi-network scheduling

Buffer is the clearest documented option here for an ongoing free scheduler. Its official pages describe a Free plan and explain that plan features differ. Do not assume the free tier includes the analytics, engagement, or team functions available on paid plans. Confirm the live channel limit and any queue or publishing restrictions before connecting accounts.

Canva for creating visuals and scheduling selected posts

Canva’s Content Planner documentation describes planning and scheduling designs from the planner or editor. It lists Facebook Pages, Instagram Business accounts, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Slack, and Tumblr as supported platforms, while noting that options can change. Canva says free users can connect one account at a time per platform; paid plans allow more accounts per team.

Instagram scheduling in the cited Canva workflow has additional restrictions: Canva says it is available to Canva Pro, Canva Teams, and Canva for Nonprofits users; it requires an Instagram Business account linked to a Facebook Page, and does not support Creator accounts. The same help page says Stories and Reels cannot currently be scheduled through that flow. These are Canva-specific workflow details, not universal Instagram rules.

Hootsuite and Later when you are evaluating paid workflows

Hootsuite’s current plan pages describe a free trial and paid plan options; do not mistake the trial for a free plan that continues indefinitely. Later’s pricing page describes publishing and account features that vary by plan. Their plan names, feature sets, and limits are volatile, so compare the live pages against your needs rather than relying on old plan descriptions.

See Hootsuite’s plans page, its Standard plan, and Later’s pricing plans.

How to build a free workflow without hitting a surprise limit

  1. List your active channels and account types. Include whether each account is a Page, Business account, or another account type; a platform being listed does not guarantee every account type can publish through the same workflow.
  2. Decide what the tool must do. Separate design, scheduling, analytics, inbox or engagement management, reporting, and team approvals. A tool that schedules posts may not cover the rest.
  3. Check the current plan page and help documentation. Confirm that access is ongoing rather than trial-only, and verify account eligibility, channel and queue caps, supported post formats, and automatic publishing behavior.
  4. Test one representative post per network. Confirm that the intended creative and caption publish as expected, and that the workflow does not require manual completion for a format you plan to use.
  5. Add another tool only when a real task is blocked. A small stack is easier to maintain, particularly when different platforms need separate captions, creative, or publishing steps.

When a free tool is no longer enough

Consider a paid plan only when you can identify a specific constraint that interferes with your work—for example, a channel cap, missing analytics or engagement features, a need for multiple accounts, or a team approval workflow. Compare that constraint with the current paid-plan documentation; feature names and limits can change. If your work remains limited to basic publishing on a few networks, a trial or a larger suite may add complexity without solving a problem you actually have.
