Free, browser-based tools cover most of the small jobs that interrupt a developer’s day: formatting and validating JSON, testing a regular expression, sending an API request, decoding a Base64 string, comparing two versions of a file, sketching a system diagram, or checking how fast a page loads. This guide organizes those tools by the task you are trying to finish rather than by brand, and it explains what “free” usually means, where your data is processed, and what to check before you depend on a service.

It does not present a complete inventory of 100 tools. The number in the original headline could not be confirmed against current listings, so each category below names representative examples instead of counting to a fixed total. Account rules, usage limits, and features change, so confirm the live service before you build a workflow around it.

What “free” usually means

Three access models appear across the tools below. They are not interchangeable, and the difference often matters more than the price tag.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Access model What it means in practice Example
No account, nothing to install Open the page in a browser and use it immediately Postman states that every tool on its tools page works this way
Free account Needed for saved, multi-step, or team workflows Postman’s Spec Hub, monitors, performance testing, and Collection Runner
Install required A desktop application runs on your machine Meld, a desktop file and folder comparison tool, named in a curated GitHub list of developer tools

Postman’s tools page puts the first model plainly: “Every tool works without an account, and there is nothing to install.” The same page adds two qualifications that belong with that statement. Some of its tools run locally while others use Postman services, and its broader platform features require a free account. Keep those points together when you describe the service to a colleague.

  • APPS FLY WITH APPLE SILICON — All your favorites, including Microsoft 365 and Adobe Creative Cloud, run lightning fast in macOS.*

Usage limits are a separate question. The sources reviewed for this guide do not state free-tier caps for the individual tools listed here, so check each provider’s current limits before relying on one for regular work.

Check where your data goes first

“Free online” tells you nothing about where your input is processed. A tool that runs client-side handles text inside your browser. A hosted tool sends it to a server. DevToolHub states that its tools run client-side, while Postman says the answer depends on the specific tool. Treat each tool as its own case.

  • Paste sample payloads and test data freely. Hold back production payloads, customer records, and anything containing credentials.
  • Redact secrets before you paste a configuration file, token, or key. Postman’s tools page lists a secret redaction tool for this purpose.
  • Look for a privacy or data-handling statement on the tool’s own page before you paste anything sensitive. A directory description is not a substitute.
  • For sensitive material, prefer a desktop application or a page you can save and run offline.

API design, testing, and webhooks

API design and specifications

Postman’s tools page lists an API Designer that produces an OpenAPI 3.1 specification, along with an OpenAPI editor, visualizer, and validator. It also lists cURL-to-code and JSON-to-types converters. The converters are most useful once you already have a working request or a sample response and need the matching code or type definitions.

Sending requests

Postman lists clients for REST, SOAP, SSE, GraphQL, WebSocket, Socket.IO, gRPC, and MCP. A curated GitHub list adds Hoppscotch, described as an open-source browser API ecosystem, and ReqBin for sending requests. Choose by protocol first. A plain REST client will not help you inspect a gRPC service or a WebSocket stream, and each tool’s protocol support should be confirmed on its own page.

Inspecting webhooks and mock responses

Webhook.site receives and displays inbound webhooks, so you can see exactly what an external service sends. httpbin is useful for testing how a client handles known responses. Postman also lists mock API and webhook tools. Because Webhook.site receives requests on a public address, avoid sending live customer data to it.

Endpoint health, headers, and certificates

Postman’s page lists API health checks, uptime and speed checks, an SSL certificate check, an HTTP header check, and load-test tools that measure requests per second. These checks run from outside your network, so they confirm what a public endpoint returns, not what happens inside your infrastructure. Run load tests only against systems you are authorized to test.

JSON and data conversion

JSON tools serve four distinct jobs. Picking the right type saves more time than picking the most popular name.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Job Use it when Named examples
Format and validate You need readable indentation or the location of a syntax error DevToolHub JSON formatter and validator; JSONLint
Explore structure Deeply nested data is hard to read as plain text DevToolHub tree view; JSON Crack
Query values You need to extract specific fields by path jq play; JSON Path Finder
Convert formats You are moving data between JSON, YAML, and CSV DevToolHub JSON-to-YAML, JSON-to-CSV, and YAML-to-JSON

Conversions are the step most likely to change data silently. Before you trust a CSV export, check how the converter handles nested arrays, empty values, and commas or quotation marks inside fields.

Regular expressions

A regex tester checks a pattern against sample text and highlights what matches. The regex testers named in the sources include DevToolHub’s tester, regex101, Regexr, and Debuggex. They differ in three ways that matter: which regex flavor they implement, whether they explain each match, and whether they show capture groups.

The flavor point is the one most often missed. A pattern that behaves correctly in a browser tester can behave differently in your language’s engine. Confirm flavor support on the tool itself, then follow this sequence:

  1. Paste a representative sample that includes edge cases, not only the easy examples.
  2. Add lines that should not match and confirm they are rejected.
  3. Copy the pattern into your code and run the same sample through the actual engine.

Formatting and linting

Playground pages let you see how a formatter or linter treats a snippet without installing anything. The directory sources name the Prettier Playground for web code, the Black Playground for Python, ShellCheck for shell scripts, SQL Formatter for SQL, and HTMLHint for HTML.

Playgrounds apply the options you select on the page, not the configuration in your project. Use them to check how a rule behaves or to reproduce a formatting question, then apply the same settings in your repository.

Encoding and decoding

  • Base64 converts binary or special-character data into plain ASCII text so it can travel safely through text-based systems.
  • URL encoding escapes reserved characters so they can sit inside a query string.
  • HTML entities escape characters such as the angle brackets and ampersand so they display as text rather than markup.

Base64 is an encoding, not encryption. Anyone can reverse it without a key, so a Base64 string in a URL, log, or config file exposes its contents. Use it for transport, never for hiding secrets.

Generation and utilities

Identifiers

UUID generators produce random identifiers for records, test fixtures, and correlation IDs. Generate them in the environment where they will be used when the value must be unpredictable.

Schedules and timestamps

Cron expression tools translate a schedule into plain language and show upcoming run times. Check that the tool’s syntax matches your scheduler, since some systems use five fields and others add a seconds field. Unix timestamp converters translate epoch values into readable dates and back; confirm whether the tool shows results in UTC or in your local time zone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Test data and project files

Placeholder-data generators produce names, addresses, and records for mockups and test databases. README, .gitignore, and code-image generators handle recurring project boilerplate. Use generated test data for demonstrations and fixtures, not as a substitute for real data validation.

Chaining operations

CyberChef covers a broad range of data operations in one interface, and you can chain steps such as decoding, converting, and hashing into a single recipe. It is most useful when a task needs several transformations in sequence.

Comparing text

Online text comparison tools work well for a quick side-by-side diff of two pasted snippets. For folders, large files, or content you do not want to paste into a browser, Meld is the desktop option named in the sources, and it requires installation. Pick the online tool for speed and the desktop application for privacy or scale.

Diagrams

Browser diagram tools differ mainly in how you describe a diagram. Some are drawn by hand, some are built from text, and some are designed around database schemas.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Tool How you build a diagram Typical use
Excalidraw Freeform drawing on a whiteboard-style canvas Quick sketches and informal architecture discussions
diagrams.net Drag-and-drop shapes and connectors Formal flowcharts and system diagrams
Mermaid Live Editor Text syntax rendered into a diagram Diagrams kept in Markdown or version control
D2 Playground Text-based diagram language Diagrams generated from code or configuration
dbdiagram.io Text-based schema description rendered as tables and relationships Database entity-relationship diagrams

Confirm export formats and whether a diagram is saved to an account before you commit to a tool. Those details vary by service and change over time.

Performance and network checks

Web performance tools include Google PageSpeed Insights, GTmetrix, WebPageTest, and Chrome Lighthouse, which also runs locally from Chrome DevTools. DNS and network lookup tools cover name resolution and reachability. Postman’s uptime, speed, and SSL checks cover similar ground for API endpoints.

Hosted performance tests run from locations the service selects, so scores shift with test location, network conditions, and time of day. Compare runs made the same way, and treat a single score as a snapshot rather than a benchmark.

Before you adopt a tool

  • Open the tool’s live page and confirm that the feature you need is available without an account, or note which account it requires.
  • Check the data-handling statement and decide whether the input is safe to paste.
  • Confirm the protocol, format, or language support you depend on, including regex flavor and schedule syntax.
  • Check whether the output can be exported in the format your project needs.
  • Note any usage limits that would affect your normal workload.
