Yes, you can convert some offline Exchange database (EDB) files to PST online for free, but the free service described here is limited to one EDB file up to 500 MB per session. Stellar says its browser-based converter uploads the database, lets you preview mailboxes and folders, and provides individual PST files in a ZIP archive. It says no running Exchange Server or Outlook installation is required. If the mailbox is still accessible on an Exchange server, a native Exchange export may be the better route; if the EDB exceeds the online limit or policy forbids uploading it, use an authorized local workflow instead.
First decide whether you have an offline EDB or an accessible Exchange mailbox
An EDB-to-PST conversion tool is relevant when the Exchange database file is available but the mailbox cannot be exported through a running Exchange environment. That is different from exporting a mailbox that an administrator can access on Exchange Server. Microsoft describes native PST export as an Exchange mailbox operation handled by the Mailbox Replication service (MRS), not as a way to convert an arbitrary offline EDB file. - Offline EDB file: Consider an EDB converter if the file is supported by the chosen tool and you are authorized to process its contents.
- Mailbox still accessible on Exchange: Ask an Exchange administrator about native mailbox export, which avoids uploading a database to a third party.
- Compliance or targeted search export: Exchange eDiscovery can export search results from selected mailbox or public-folder sources. It is not a general-purpose converter for a standalone offline EDB.
What the free online converter offers—and its limits
Stellar’s online EDB Converter describes an upload-preview-download workflow. The company says the service accepts one EDB file per free session, with a free online limit of 500 MB. Its page states that the online service supports files up to 5 GB with Premium. Stellar says converted output is automatically deleted when the stated retention period ends. It also says the connection is encrypted and that the service does not modify the original EDB. These are the company’s representations, not independently verified security or preservation findings. Keep your own untouched copy of the source file and follow your organization’s rules for mailbox data before uploading anything.

How to use the browser-based workflow
- Check the source file and permission. Confirm that you have the EDB itself, that its size fits the current online limit, and that you are authorized to process and upload the mailbox data.
- Open Stellar’s online EDB converter. Upload the supported EDB file to the service. Stellar says the online workflow does not require Outlook or a running Exchange Server.
- Review the mailbox preview. Check the listed mailboxes and folder structure before proceeding so you can identify whether the expected data appears.
- Download the results. Stellar says the converted mailboxes are provided as individual PST files within a ZIP archive. Save the archive and extract the PSTs in a controlled location.
- Validate the PSTs before relying on them. Preserve the original EDB, open or import the output in an appropriate environment, and check that the expected mailbox content is present. Do not treat successful download alone as proof that every required item was recovered.

Protect mailbox data and verify the result
Mailbox databases can contain personal, confidential, or regulated information. Before sending an EDB to an online service, confirm that your role and the applicable privacy, retention, security, and authorization rules allow it. A vendor’s encryption and deletion statements can inform that decision, but they are not a substitute for your organization’s own approval or an independent security assessment.

- Keep an unchanged source EDB in a secure location; work from a copy when possible.
- Record which database was processed and where the resulting ZIP and PST files are stored.
- Check that the output archive contains the expected PST files, then validate the relevant mailboxes and folders in an appropriate mail environment.
- Restrict access to both source and converted files, and dispose of temporary copies under your retention policy.
