Yes, you can recover some deleted iPhone data for free—but start with Apple’s Recently Deleted folders and existing synced copies or backups. A third-party tool advertised as free may let you download or scan at no cost while charging to export the recovered file. And if no copy survives in Recently Deleted, iCloud, another device, or a backup, the available evidence does not establish that software can retrieve the original from a modern iPhone.
Start with Apple’s free recovery options
Check the built-in recovery folder for the data type first. These options do not require paid recovery software, but their eligibility rules and time windows differ.
Recover deleted photos and videos

On iPhone, open Photos and find Recently Deleted under Utilities. Authenticate if prompted.

Select the photo or video, then tap Recover.

You can also check Photos on iCloud.com and open Recently Deleted.

Apple says deleted photos and videos remain in Recently Deleted for 30 days. Items permanently removed from that folder cannot be recovered through this feature. Recover deleted messages

On a compatible iPhone, open Messages and tap Edit or Filters, depending on the current interface.

Tap Show Recently Deleted, select the conversations, then tap Recover.

Apple’s support article says this feature requires iOS 16 or later and covers eligible messages deleted within the previous 30 to 40 days. Apple’s iPhone guide describes recovery for up to 30 days, so do not treat the longer end of the support article’s range as a guaranteed window for every device or message. Messages deleted before updating to the required software cannot be recovered through this route. Apple also says messages removed with Undo Send are permanently deleted, and expired unsaved audio messages are not recoverable. When Messages in iCloud is enabled, recovery affects the user’s devices signed in to the same Apple Account. Check synced copies and backups before using recovery software
A file may still exist somewhere other than the iPhone’s current view. Check iCloud Photos, other devices signed in to the same Apple Account, and the dates of any iCloud or computer backups. A backup helps only if it predates the deletion and contains the data you need.
There is an important distinction for photos: when iCloud Photos is enabled, the photo library is synced through iCloud Photos and is not duplicated in iCloud Backup. Apple says iCloud Backup may include other information such as settings, documents, messages, and app data, depending on your setup. See Apple’s iCloud terms.

Understand the effect of restoring a backup
Restoring is not the same as exporting one deleted file. Apple requires an already configured iPhone to be erased before restoring an iCloud backup; a computer restore also replaces the device state with the selected backup. Before proceeding, confirm the backup date and protect any current data you still need. Follow Apple’s backup restore instructions.

- Scan: The tool searches a device or backup without charging.
- Preview: You can see the specific result you want.
- Export: You can save that recovered file without paying.
A free download, scan, or preview does not show that exporting the original file will be free—or that the file can actually be recovered. Before installing a tool or granting it account access, confirm the exact iPhone model, iOS version, computer operating system, data type, recovery source, and export terms. Also check whether its process restores or overwrites current device content, and what access to your device or account it requires.
A 2026 comparison published by Wondershare/Dr.Fone presents eight tools as a checklist, not a tested leaderboard. It did not independently verify current vendor prices, trial limits, recovery success rates, or results from controlled tests. Treat its product descriptions as claims rather than independent proof: read the comparison and its limitations.
The US App Store listing for Gbyte Recovery: Photos & SMS currently shows “Free · In-App Purchases” and describes recovery from iCloud backups and synced content. That establishes the listing’s price label and the developer’s stated approach, not whether it can retrieve a particular item or export it without payment.

“No backup” does not by itself mean the data is recoverable. First check Recently Deleted and synced copies, including other devices and iCloud Photos where relevant. If no surviving copy is available, the cited Apple guidance and tool comparison do not establish that any particular app can retrieve permanently deleted original data from a modern iPhone. A tool’s “deep scan” label is not evidence that it bypasses iPhone encryption or guarantees recovery.
Apple’s iCloud terms place responsibility on users to maintain another suitable copy of their data: “It is your responsibility to maintain appropriate alternate backup of your information and data.” Apple iCloud Terms.
