Buffer’s free Instagram hashtag generator turns a post topic, description, or draft text into hashtag ideas. It is an ideation tool—not a live Instagram trend scanner or a promise of better reach. Review its suggestions, choose tags that fit your post and audience, and use account insights to judge what works for you.

What Buffer’s Instagram hashtag generator does

The tool asks, “What’s your Instagram post about?” You can describe the post, enter a general topic, or paste text you have already written. It then generates hashtag suggestions intended to help you develop a relevant set for that content. More detail about the post can help make the suggestions more tailored, according to Buffer’s tool page.

Buffer frames the next step as publishing or scheduling with Buffer, but you can also treat the output simply as a list of ideas to review before posting elsewhere.

Are the suggestions based on live Instagram trends?

No. Buffer says this generator does not pull directly from real-time Instagram data. Its suggestions are described as reflecting popular and niche content trends, but that does not make them a live trend feed, a verified ranking of hashtags, or evidence that a tag will increase reach. Buffer also cautions: “AI responses can be inaccurate or misleading. Always review before using.”

Use the generated list as a starting point. Remove tags that do not accurately describe the post, fit your audience, or make sense for your account. Buffer recommends pairing suggestions with tags you already know work in your space.

How many free recommendations can you get?

As stated on Buffer’s tool page checked October 7, 2026, the exact-title Instagram generator allows up to five recommendations per day without an account and says use is unlimited with a free Buffer account. These are limits for this specific page, and product terms can change.

Buffer also has a separate, broader AI hashtag generator. That page lets you select a platform, optionally specify a niche, and choose how many hashtags to generate; it describes combining broad, niche, and community tags. Its page states a limit of five generations per day without an account. That is a different usage description from the Instagram-specific page, so check the page you are using rather than assuming one limit applies to both.

How many hashtags can you publish through Buffer?

Buffer’s Help Center says its Instagram composer enforces a maximum of five hashtags per post. Buffer’s hashtag manager can store groups of up to 30 tags, but that is the capacity of a saved group—not permission to publish all 30 in one Instagram post. See Buffer’s instructions for using Hashtag Manager for its product behavior.

Generate more ideas if useful, then select up to five that are most relevant when composing an Instagram post in Buffer. Keep saved groups organized by topic or content type so you can choose a focused subset instead of inserting a long, generic list.

A practical way to use the generator

  1. Describe the actual post. Include the subject and useful context, such as the audience or angle. A specific description gives the tool more to work with than a broad label.
  2. Review every suggestion. Check that each tag describes the post and is appropriate for the community you want to reach. Remove irrelevant or questionable suggestions rather than using the full output automatically.
  3. Choose a small, relevant set. In Buffer’s Instagram composer, use no more than five hashtags per post. A saved group can hold more, but the composer’s per-post limit remains five.
  4. Track results in your account. Buffer’s December 3, 2024 strategy article recommends organizing hashtag ideas into categories and reviewing post insights to learn which sets work for your account. Use your own results to refine future choices; the generator does not establish which tags will perform best for you.

Can you rely on the tool for your whole hashtag strategy?

No. The generator can speed up brainstorming, but it does not know from live Instagram data which tags are currently gaining traction, and its output is not a substitute for your knowledge of your niche or your account’s performance. Buffer’s own guidance is to review suggestions and combine them with tags you know suit your space. Treat the tool as one input, then use your post insights to make account-specific decisions.
