The free plans documented by UptimeRobot and StatusCake both offer HTTP/website uptime checks every five minutes. UptimeRobot lists up to 50 monitors; StatusCake lists 10 uptime tests. Start with the service whose capacity, alerting, and additional checks fit your site, then monitor an actual public URL rather than relying on ping alone. These are documented plan details, not a hands-on comparison, and plan terms can change.
What are the best free HTTP monitoring tools for websites?
For a small site, UptimeRobot and StatusCake are two relevant free hosted options in the official plan information reviewed. Neither should be treated as a universal winner: the useful choice depends on how many URLs you need to check, the included interval, how alerts reach you, and whether you also want domain, SSL, page-speed, or status-page features.
| Service | Free HTTP/uptime allowance | Other documented free checks | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| UptimeRobot | 50 monitors; five-minute checks. HTTP/website checks are supported, and the vendor says commercial projects may use the free plan subject to fair-use expectations. | Its Help Center lists keyword, ping, and port monitoring. Its FAQ describes a public status page and other plan features. | Check current terms if you need faster checks, more than 50 monitors, additional team logins, a custom-domain status page, longer log retention, or more alert options. [c001] [c002] |
| StatusCake | 10 uptime tests; five-minute test interval. | The pricing page lists one page-speed monitor, one domain monitor, and one SSL monitor. The free-monitoring page also describes domain and SSL checks, alerts, and reporting. | The official pages disagree about the SSL check interval: the pricing page says 24 hours, while the free-monitoring page says 30 minutes. Confirm the current interval in the live plan or account before relying on it. [c003] [c004] |
The table reflects vendor documentation available in 2026, not independent testing or a complete survey of every free monitor. StatusCake’s pricing page may display localized currency; a displayed price should not be assumed to apply in every region. For the free-plan comparison, the key point is the stated allowance and cadence rather than a market-wide ranking.

How can I monitor my website uptime for free?
Use a hosted monitor to request the public URL on a schedule and alert you when the response meets its definition of a failure. The precise setup screens and supported conditions vary by provider; consult the current account interface rather than assuming a particular menu name.
#1 Best Overall
- Used Book in Good Condition
- Choose a representative URL. Add the canonical public address visitors use. If an important service is behind a path such as a login, checkout, or API endpoint, monitor that separately instead of assuming a homepage check covers it.
- Select an HTTP(S) or website check. Configure the actual URL and, where the product supports it, the expected response status or a content condition. HTTP(S) checks assess the web response; a ping check only tests host reachability.
- Attach an alert destination. Select the notification contact or channel available on the plan. UptimeRobot documents attaching alert contacts and testing notifications in its FAQ. Send a test notification after setup so you know it reaches someone who can act.
- Understand failure verification. Review whether the service verifies a no-response failure, delays alerting, or repeats checks before notification. UptimeRobot says it uses multiple checks and remote locations to verify no-response outages, but an erroneous HTTP status is marked down without that same no-response verification. That is UptimeRobot’s documented behavior, not a universal monitoring rule.
- Add separate checks for separate risks. SSL expiration, domain expiration, and page speed are not the same as HTTP availability. If those matter, check that the free plan provides them and note their own interval.
What is the difference between an HTTP check and a ping?
An HTTP(S) check requests a website URL and judges the result using the returned HTTP status. It therefore tests whether the web service is responding in a way the monitor considers acceptable. A ping check tests whether a host responds to ping requests; it does not establish that the web application or page is working. UptimeRobot’s FAQ puts it plainly: “Ping is not a good fit for monitoring websites as a website (its IP) can respond to ping requests while it is down.” [c002]
For a public website, HTTP(S) is generally the more relevant first check. Ping can still answer a different operational question, such as whether a host responds at all, if the plan supports it and that is useful to your setup. Neither check alone confirms every user journey: a successful homepage response does not prove that a purchase, sign-in, or database-backed feature works correctly.
How often do free website monitoring tools check a site?
The UptimeRobot free plan lists five-minute checks, and StatusCake lists a five-minute uptime-test interval on both official pages reviewed. A five-minute schedule means a failure may not be discovered until a later scheduled check; it is not a guarantee that detection or alert delivery happens within a fixed maximum time. Actual notification timing can also depend on the service’s verification and alert behavior.

Monitor capacity matters alongside cadence. UptimeRobot’s listed free limit is 50 monitors, while StatusCake’s is 10 uptime tests. Count distinct pages, endpoints, or services that warrant their own check before choosing: splitting checks can make failures easier to locate, but uses allowance faster.
How should you choose between the free plans?
- Choose by monitor count. Compare the number of URLs you genuinely need rather than assuming one homepage check covers the site.
- Check the alert path. Confirm the free tier’s notification options and team access match who needs to respond. Test notifications before relying on them.
- Decide whether bundled monitoring is useful. StatusCake documents limited domain, SSL, and page-speed monitoring on free pages. Those checks have different purposes and schedules from HTTP uptime checks.
- Account for the failure mode. If a single missed response could create a noisy alert, examine the provider’s documented verification and delay controls, and whether those settings are available on its free plan.
- Recheck volatile plan details. Free allowances and terms can change. For StatusCake SSL cadence in particular, two official pages give different intervals, so verify the value shown for your account.
UptimeRobot says commercial and revenue-generating projects may use its free plan, subject to its fair-use expectations. Read the provider’s current terms before using any service for a business-critical workload.
ScreenshotNeo is a screenshot alternative for visual checks, not an uptime monitor
If your question is whether a page looks right, a screenshot complements an HTTP alert; it does not replace scheduled availability monitoring. ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. Its API can capture a URL as an image or PDF, but the facts provided for ScreenshotNeo do not establish it as a free HTTP uptime-monitoring service. Use an uptime monitor for recurring availability checks and a screenshot when a visual capture is useful.

Capture a page with one request
For a one-off visual check, use the following cURL command with your ScreenshotNeo access key and the page you want to inspect. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for API details.

Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify page verdict and billing status in headers. An MCP server exposes screenshot tools for AI agents and MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Troubleshooting a free website monitor
The monitor reports down, but the site opens for me
Check the exact URL, response status, and condition configured in the monitor. Your browser may reach a cached or authenticated page that the monitor cannot access, or the monitored path may return a different response from the homepage. Review the provider’s verification process before treating one alert as proof of a sustained outage.
The server responds to ping, but the website is unavailable
That is possible because ping reachability does not verify the HTTP response. Add or inspect an HTTP(S) check for the public URL, and monitor a more specific path if the affected function is not represented by the homepage.

Alerts do not arrive
Confirm that the correct alert contact is attached, then use the provider’s notification test if available. Check the destination’s spam or filtering rules and whether the selected alert channel is included in the free plan.
The free tier does not cover all endpoints
Count the required checks and compare that number with the plan’s documented allowance. Prioritize public pages and service endpoints whose failure needs a distinct alert; avoid spending limited slots on redundant URLs unless they test different behavior.
SSL information does not match between pages
StatusCake’s two official free-plan pages show different SSL intervals. Verify the current interval in the service’s live plan information or account before treating the SSL check as time-sensitive coverage. The stated uptime-test interval is five minutes on both pages.

What a basic free monitor can and cannot tell you
A scheduled HTTP check is a low-effort way to learn that a URL returned a result the monitor classified as down, and an alert gives you a prompt to investigate. Its cadence and failure-verification policy shape how quickly a problem is surfaced; they do not provide a measured guarantee of detection time. A monitor aimed only at the homepage also cannot establish that every route, user action, or backend dependency works.
For fuller visibility, select checks that correspond to separate risks: public HTTP response for availability, an application-specific URL or content condition for a critical function, and SSL or domain checks for expiration risk. Keep the alert recipient current and periodically verify delivery. This layered setup gives a small site a useful starting point without confusing host reachability, page availability, and the health of the entire application.

Can I monitor a commercial website with UptimeRobot’s free plan?
UptimeRobot’s Help Center says business and revenue-generating projects may use the free plan, subject to its fair-use expectations. Check the current terms before relying on that allowance.
Does an HTTP uptime check prove my whole website works?
No. It tests the configured URL and whatever response condition the monitor supports. Important routes and user flows may need their own checks.
