Garena Free Fire 1.99.1 and Free Fire MAX 2.99.1 were May 31, 2023 releases, not current versions. For normal play, install the current edition from Garena’s official page or an authorized app store. A 2023 APK and OBB may install on some devices, but an obsolete client can fail authentication, demand an update, expose your account to modified files, or trigger enforcement under Garena’s anti-hack policy.
What these version numbers mean
Free Fire and Free Fire MAX are separate Android applications with separate package and release numbering. Version 2.99.1 is not simply a newer build of standard Free Fire.

| Game | Historical version | Date | Role and status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Garena Free Fire | 1.99.1 | May 31, 2023 | Standard, generally aimed at less-capable phones; historical build reported in the May 2023 coverage |
| Free Fire MAX | 2.99.1 | May 31, 2023 | Higher-fidelity edition; date appears in Apple’s version history and the APKMirror archive |
Apple’s listing records Free Fire MAX 2.99.1 on May 31, 2023 (version history). An archival APKMirror record identifies an arm64-v8a package signed by Garena International I and marked Android 4.1+, but those metadata values do not guarantee that it will run or connect today.
Garena’s site now lists 2026 updates, including OB54 dated June 23, 2026 (official site; update page). The two 2023 packages should therefore be treated as archived software.

What the May 2023 update introduced
The May 2023 coverage of the patch notes attributes these changes to the releases:
- Achievement System.
- Duo Active Skills mode in Clash Squad Ranked.
- Customizable quick messages.
- Alok character awakening and the new Sonia character.
- Clash Squad Season 19, scheduled to begin June 1, 2023 at 17:00 GMT+8.
- Color Cube-related Battle Royale content.
- Gameplay, loot, vending-machine, safe-zone and Gloo Wall adjustments.
These are historical features of that update, not a description of the current live game. The source article labels the patch “Winterlands,” but that label is inconsistent with the May date and should not be treated as a confirmed official update name.
APK and OBB: what the old installation model means
APK
An APK is Android’s installable application package. Android checks its signature and package identity before installation.

- Amazon.com Gift Cards never expire and carry no fees.
- Multiple gift card designs and denominations to choose from.
- Redeemable towards millions of items store-wide at Amazon.com or certain affiliated websites.
- Available for immediate delivery. Gift cards sent by email can be scheduled up to a year in advance.
- No returns and no refunds on Gift Cards.
OBB
An OBB traditionally stores large expansion data separately from the APK. Older game distributions sometimes required copying it into an Android/obb/ folder.
Why this is different now
Google Play and newer Android releases commonly use app bundles, split APKs, asset packs and store-managed downloads. Scoped-storage rules can also restrict manual access to Android/obb. Having an old OBB does not prove that a current phone, account or server will accept it.
Safer way to install Free Fire today
- Open Garena’s official site at ff.garena.com/en/ and follow the store link for your region.
- In an authorized store, search for the official Free Fire or Free Fire MAX listing and check the publisher identity.
- Install or update through the store, then let the game download its own resources.
- Keep the APK, data and account from the same official release; do not mix files from mirrors or different versions.
Garena’s Anti-Hack FAQ warns that unauthorized APKs and modified clients can result in an account ban and recommends authorized stores such as Google Play, the iOS App Store, Huawei AppGallery, Xiaomi App Store and OPPO App Market where available.

Historical APK + OBB procedure for standard Free Fire
The May 2023 article reported this procedure for the standard 1.99.1 package. It is a historical record, not a guaranteed solution:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Download the article’s ZIP archive and extract it.
- Locate the APK and its matching OBB.
- Install the APK only after checking that it is the intended package and that Android permits installation from the chosen file source.
- Place the standard Free Fire OBB in
Android/OBB/com.dts.freefireth/. - The filename reported by that source is
main.2019116185.com.dts.freefireth.obb. - Start the game and expect a download, forced update or server rejection.
The source does not establish an equally reliable OBB path and filename for Free Fire MAX 2.99.1. Do not copy the standard game’s folder name to MAX or combine an APK and OBB from different releases.
Free Fire or Free Fire MAX?
| Criterion | Free Fire | Free Fire MAX |
|---|---|---|
| Hardware target | Generally the lighter option | Designed for higher-fidelity presentation and compatible hardware |
| Historical build | 1.99.1 | 2.99.1 |
| Historical OBB evidence | Standard path and filename reported by the May 2023 source | Exact OBB details not established |
| Main archival risk | Obsolete client, package or server mismatch | Obsolete client plus larger files and architecture mismatch |
| Best current choice | Use the official store-managed release for your region | |
Risks of third-party APK and OBB files
- Repacked files can contain malware, spyware, adware or credential theft.
- Fake OBB archives may include unwanted executable content.
- Modified clients, cheats, “unlimited diamonds” builds and “anti-ban” packages can trigger suspension or a ban.
- Incorrect signatures, package identifiers or regions can cause installation and login failure.
- You may lose access to updates or saved data if you clear storage or install the wrong edition.
A file listed by an archive as signed by Garena is not the same as a file distributed through an official Garena channel. If you must preserve a 2023 build for archival testing, use a reputable archive such as the APKMirror release index or its arm64 package record, verify the signature and scan the files. Do not use a primary account until provenance is clear.

- No returns and no refunds on gift cards. Good for use on the US Google Play Store only. Terms apply - see below.
- Google Play gift codes can be used on the Google Play Store, the official app store for Android, to purchase apps, games, and more.
- To redeem, enter code in the Play Store app or play.google.com.
- Endless games to explore: Find and play old and new favorites – from mind-bending puzzles to epic quests and more.
- Just the app you’re looking for: Millions of apps means millions of ways to get things done, learn something new, and maybe even meet someone special.
Troubleshooting an archived installation
“App not installed”
Check CPU architecture, free storage, an existing installation signed with another certificate, a corrupt APK and Android’s permission to install from that source. Back up account access before removing a working installation.
Missing OBB or download failure
Confirm the folder and package name, exact APK/OBB match and available storage. Newer Android storage restrictions or store-managed asset delivery may make manual placement ineffective.
Recommended Free Tools
The game opens but demands an update
This usually indicates a server-side version requirement. Update through an authorized store; do not bypass it with a modified client.

Login warning or suspected ban
Stop using the sideloaded or modified client and return to the official installation. Garena’s anti-hack guidance specifically warns about unauthorized APKs.
Several APKMirror variants appear
Variants can target different architectures or packaging formats. An arm64-v8a package is not automatically compatible with every Android device.
Bottom line
Free Fire 1.99.1 and Free Fire MAX 2.99.1 document the May 31, 2023 release cycle. They may be useful as historical artifacts, but they are not current downloads and cannot be promised to authenticate or run on live servers in 2026. For play, use Garena’s current official store distribution; for archival work, verify every file and accept that installation, compatibility and account access may fail.
