There is no verified set of 60 ecommerce-ready templates established by the available listings. A page titled “60 Best Free Responsive Website Templates 2026” includes designs for several kinds of sites, not just online stores. Before choosing one, check whether it is a platform theme with commerce features, a storefront front end that needs a separate checkout, or a general website template that may not support ecommerce.
Does the “60 free eCommerce templates” count mean 60 online-store themes?
No. The number in a roundup title does not establish that every item supports products, a cart, and checkout. Colorlib’s 2026 roundup covers multiple website purposes. Its Shionhouse entry is described as a clothing storefront, but checkout requires a commerce platform behind it. ThemeHunk’s 2026 ecommerce-focused collection is titled “12+ Free eCommerce Website Design Templates 2026.” These are different scopes, not evidence of a verified list of 60 complete store themes.
For a useful shortlist, verify each candidate’s current listing or download page and identify what it actually provides. A template’s appearance alone does not tell you whether it includes catalog management, cart, payments, or checkout.

What does “free ecommerce template” mean?
| Type | What it provides | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Commerce-platform theme | A theme installed inside a commerce platform. It may provide storefront layouts and platform-integrated commerce features. | Supported platform, included storefront functions, theme terms, updates, and any costs for the platform, hosting, apps, or services. |
| Storefront front-end template | Website presentation, such as landing, collection, and product-page designs. | Whether a separate platform or implementation supplies product data, cart, checkout, and payment processing. Shionhouse, as described by Colorlib, needs a commerce platform behind its storefront for checkout. |
| General responsive website template | A responsive design for a broader site purpose, such as a business or portfolio site. | Whether ecommerce functionality exists at all. Responsive layout is not proof of product, cart, or checkout support. |
Verified platform-specific option: Shopify
Shopify’s official theme store showed 24 free themes when accessed on October 7, 2026. That is a dated snapshot of a dynamic listing, not a guaranteed current count. Check the live free-themes collection for availability and current listings.

Horizon
Shopify lists Horizon as free and documents version 4.2.0, dated September 18, 2026. Its listing describes product showcases and customization features. Those are Shopify’s product claims, not independent performance testing; review the live listing and documentation for the features your store needs.
Shopify says, “Free themes are developed by Shopify.” Its Help Center also explains that paid themes are made by third-party designers: you can preview them, but must purchase them before publishing. The theme license applies to the store for which the theme was bought. Read Shopify’s current theme guidance and theme licensing information before relying on a particular theme’s terms.

How to assess a candidate before building your store
Use this checklist to compare a platform theme, a front-end template, and any broader site design without treating them as equivalent:
- Platform and implementation: Confirm whether it installs in your commerce platform, needs WordPress or another system, or is only a front-end download. Check what technical work is required to connect the design to your store.
- Commerce scope: Look for evidence of product listings and product pages, then separately confirm cart, checkout, and payment integration. Do not infer checkout support from a storefront demo.
- Catalog and merchandising: Match the design to your products, variants, imagery, and collection structure. Check whether filters or other needed catalog tools are supported; Shopify’s theme store provides catalog-size and feature filters, but its available listings and filters can change.
- Customization and support: Determine which settings are available without code, whether code access is needed, and who maintains the template and answers support questions.
- Mobile, accessibility, and language: Inspect key pages on a phone-sized viewport. Check readability, navigation, keyboard access, and whether the languages your customers need are supported; do not assume these qualities from a responsive label.
- Freshness and terms: Check the current version or update evidence, license, and support policy. “Free” describes a template’s price, not necessarily the cost of the platform, hosting, domain, apps, or implementation.
Test the design with real store content
- Open the current demo or listing. Confirm its platform, version or update information, and license. If the page does not say whether checkout is included, treat that as unverified rather than assuming it is.
- Populate representative products. Use examples with your actual image shapes, product descriptions, variants, and collection depth. Look for layout problems the demo’s sample content may not reveal.
- Walk through the buying path. Test product discovery, product details, cart, and checkout in the platform or implementation you intend to use. A front-end template may need separate commerce software for the later steps.
- Check phone and accessibility behavior. Review navigation, text, controls, and product imagery at a phone viewport and test keyboard operation where possible.
- Calculate the full operating cost. Include any required platform, hosting, domain, apps, paid features, developer work, and support—not only the template price.
What to take away from a 60-template roundup
Treat “60” as a count of designs only if the roundup actually includes 60 entries, and treat those entries as ecommerce-ready only when their current pages establish the required store functionality. The Colorlib and ThemeHunk examples show why title, site purpose, and commerce scope must be checked separately. Shopify’s current free-theme collection is a platform-specific place to investigate, but its count and available themes can change.
