The right free Buddy Punch alternative depends on how your team works. Clockify is the closer fit for project, client, and billable-hour tracking; Homebase is aimed at small hourly teams that need shift scheduling and a time clock together. Both vendors advertise free options, but their published limits and feature access differ. Check the live plan details before moving employee records or relying on a free tier.

Which free Buddy Punch alternative fits your team?

Choose by workflow rather than by the word “free.” A project time tracker records hours against clients, projects, or billable work. An hourly workforce tool coordinates shifts and attendance. Those needs overlap, but neither product category is a complete substitute for the other.

  • Choose Clockify if your priority is tracking time against projects or clients, including billable hours, and you want to assess its web, mobile, desktop, or kiosk options.
  • Consider Homebase if you run a small, hourly, shift-based business and want scheduling and employee clock-ins in one workflow.
  • Keep evaluating other options if GPS or geofencing, time off, payroll connections, or detailed historical records are non-negotiable. The cited vendor pages do not establish that these capabilities are included in every free plan.

Clockify’s comparison page describes its own product as a Buddy Punch alternative and lists time, attendance, and billable-hour tracking. Homebase positions its product for hourly teams. These are vendor descriptions, not an independent feature audit.

How the published free options compare

Decision point Clockify Homebase
Best fit Project, client, and billable-hour tracking, according to Clockify’s comparison page. Hourly, shift-based businesses, according to Homebase’s alternatives article.
Free-plan scope Clockify advertises a free plan; its pricing page search excerpt notes a one-month data range. Confirm the current limit and other entitlements on Clockify’s pricing page. Homebase’s September 18, 2026 article describes a free plan for up to 10 team members at one location. Treat this as Homebase’s published claim and check its current plan page before relying on it.
Time-clock modes Clockify’s comparison page describes web, mobile, desktop, and kiosk functionality. Confirm which modes and related controls are available on the plan you select. Homebase’s free time-clock page describes employees clocking in and tracking hours. Check the page for current details: Homebase free time clock.
Scheduling and shifts Clockify lists scheduling, but indicates that some capabilities may be paid or limited. Scheduling is central to Homebase’s positioning for hourly teams; verify what its free tier includes.
GPS, geofencing, and time off Clockify’s comparison indicates that GPS tracking and time off may be paid or limited. The cited Homebase pages do not establish whether these features are included in the free tier.
Historical records and reports Clockify’s pricing-page excerpt flags a one-month data range on its free plan. Check the live page for the exact scope and reporting limits. The cited comparison establishes a team-member and location claim, but does not state the free tier’s historical-data or reporting limits.
Payroll, export, and migration Clockify describes importing past tracked time and team/project data. Confirm which records transfer and whether your export or payroll workflow is supported. The cited pages do not establish migration coverage, export details, or payroll integrations for the free tier.

Every feature and limit above comes from vendor-published material, and plan terms can change. In particular, a feature mentioned on a product comparison page is not proof that it is included at no charge.

What “free” means when replacing Buddy Punch

A free plan and a free trial are different. Clockify and Homebase advertise free options in the cited materials. Buddy Punch’s official pricing page advertises a 14-day trial without a credit card; that is a time-limited trial, not evidence of a permanent free plan. The same Buddy Punch page lists a Starter price of $4.99 per user per month plus a $19 monthly base fee under its displayed billing selection. Because billing selections and prices can change, check Buddy Punch pricing directly for the current terms before comparing costs.

When evaluating a free tier, check the limits that could disrupt payroll or daily operations, not just the sign-up price:

For field crews or payroll-dependent workflows

Do not decide on the basis of a general feature list. Verify GPS or geofencing rules, time-off handling, payroll integrations, approval steps, and export format on the exact plan you would use. The available vendor pages do not establish that all of these are included free in either product.

Switching without losing time records

Before canceling Buddy Punch, identify which records your business must retain and test the new system with a small sample. Clockify says it can import past tracked time and team/project data, but that does not guarantee that every Buddy Punch record, approval, schedule, or payroll field will transfer.

  1. List required records. Include time entries, employee identifiers, project or job codes, approvals, and any reports required for payroll or recordkeeping.
  2. Check export and import formats. Confirm what Buddy Punch can export and what the destination will accept; compare fields rather than assuming similarly named columns mean the same thing.
  3. Run a small import test. Use representative employees and date ranges. Check totals, time zones, breaks, job assignments, and duplicate entries.
  4. Compare a live pay period. Run the new clock alongside the existing process long enough to verify manager approvals and payroll exports before relying on it.
  5. Retain an accessible archive. Keep the records you need outside the departing service before ending access, and make sure authorized staff can retrieve them.
