A free Bootstrap 404 template can provide the page’s design, but your hosting service must also be configured to show it when visitors request a URL that does not exist. One concrete option is KryptonB’s downloadable 404.html, whose README specifies Bootstrap 5.2.3 and a Bootstrap CDN dependency.
What a Bootstrap 404 page does—and what it does not do
A 404 page tells visitors that the requested page could not be found and can guide them back to useful parts of your site. A template supplies the HTML and styling for that message. It does not automatically configure your web host to display the page for missing URLs; that behavior depends on the host or server.
A free Bootstrap 404 template to consider
The KryptonB repository describes a responsive HTML 404 error page built with HTML5, CSS3, and Bootstrap 5.2.3. Its README instructs users to clone the repository and open 404.html in a browser. The page loads Bootstrap from a CDN, so the README’s stated setup requires an internet connection. These are the repository’s own descriptions, not independent compatibility or accessibility test results. See the KryptonB repository and README.

Check the Bootstrap version before adding the template
The KryptonB README names Bootstrap 5.2.3 as the template’s dependency. Separately, the Bootstrap GitHub repository’s installation instructions listed version 5.3.8 when accessed on October 7, 2026. The latter does not mean the KryptonB template has been updated to 5.3.8: verify and manage the template’s dependency yourself if you want it to match another version in your project. Evaluate a template before using it
- Version: Check that the Bootstrap version and other dependencies suit your project.
- Asset loading: Find out whether CSS, scripts, and images are served locally or from a CDN. The KryptonB README specifies a CDN for Bootstrap; locally hosted assets and CDN assets have different network and maintenance requirements.
- License: Read the license that applies to the specific files you plan to reuse, including any attribution conditions.
- Host behavior: Confirm how your hosting provider serves a custom page for a nonexistent URL.
- Mobile and accessibility: Inspect the actual code and check the layout on small screens, keyboard navigation, readable contrast, and whether the error message is clear.
Configure the host to serve the page
After adapting the template, make sure the custom page is in the publishing location and configure your host according to its own rules. GitHub Pages documents a specific option: a custom 404.html or 404.md file in the publishing source can be displayed for nonexistent pages. That is a GitHub Pages behavior, not a universal instruction for other hosting services. GitHub Pages: creating a custom 404 page.

Once deployed, test an address that does not exist on your site. Confirm that the custom page appears, its styles and images load, and its links lead somewhere useful. If the host still shows its default error page, check the host’s custom-error-page settings and the location or filename it expects.
