For a self-hosted, phone-first photo library, start by evaluating Immich. PhotoPrism is a good fit for organizing and searching an existing collection; Nextcloud Photos or its Memories app makes sense if you already use Nextcloud; and Ente Photos is worth considering if you want end-to-end encryption with a hosted option as well as self-hosting. None is a one-for-one copy of Apple Photos and iCloud sync, and “free” software can still require you to pay for storage, hardware, power, or a hosted plan.

Which iCloud Photos alternative fits your needs?

Immich: best starting point for self-hosted phone uploads

Immich is the clearest fit if you want your phone to send photos to a server you control. Its first-party mobile app can upload chosen albums, and it can remove already-uploaded files from the phone to free space. That convenience raises the stakes for maintaining the server and keeping an independent backup.

Be particularly careful when using Immich with an iPhone and iCloud Photos. Immich’s mobile guide says Apple’s service uses two-way sync: deleting a photo, or using the iPhone’s Free Up Space action, can also delete it from iCloud and other Apple devices signed in to the same Apple Account. This is a warning about the interaction with Apple Photos, not a general property of every photo app. Read Immich’s mobile guide before using cleanup features, and review its backup and restore guidance.

PhotoPrism: a library for browsing and organizing

PhotoPrism is aimed at managing a media collection, with web and progressive web app access, search filters, labels, face recognition, and metadata support described in its feature documentation. Its phone-backup path differs from Immich’s: PhotoPrism documents using compatible third-party applications, including PhotoSync. That means the upload workflow involves a separate app, which you should verify suits your phone and setup before relying on it.

Nextcloud Photos or Memories: photos within a private-cloud setup

Nextcloud Photos

Choose Nextcloud Photos if you want photos as part of a broader Nextcloud installation for files and other private-cloud functions. The project describes timeline browsing, albums, sharing, and automatic uploads through its Android and iOS apps. Its optional Recognize app can add AI tagging and recognition, according to the project documentation. See the Nextcloud Photos project.

Memories

Memories offers a more photo-specific experience, but it depends on Nextcloud and its server environment. Its installation documentation lists requirements involving the database, PHP extensions, media tools, and cache configuration. Use the current installation guide to check compatibility rather than treating Memories as a single-app replacement for iCloud Photos. Phone uploads use the official Nextcloud mobile apps.

Ente Photos: hosted convenience or self-hosted encryption

Ente is relevant if end-to-end encryption across clients is a priority and you want to choose between a hosted service and operating the open-source stack yourself. The project README describes background uploads and distinguishes the hosted service from its self-hosting option. Hosting it yourself means taking responsibility for server operation and storage; open-source code does not make that maintenance disappear.

What “free” means for a photo library

Open-source software may have no software license fee, but running a large photo library still uses storage and infrastructure. With a self-hosted option, account for the computer or server, drives, electricity, internet access, configuration, updates, and backups. A hosted option avoids running the server yourself but may have storage limits or paid plans. Compare the operating model—not just the app’s download price—before moving a collection.

Plan a safe move from iCloud Photos

  1. Choose the operating model. Decide whether you want to run a server, use an existing Nextcloud installation, or rely on a hosted service. Include storage and ongoing maintenance in that decision.
  2. Set up independent protection. Before treating an app’s uploads as a backup, establish a separate copy of the server’s photo data and understand how to restore it. Immich documents backup and restore as a distinct responsibility in its backup guide.
  3. Test the phone workflow with a small selection. Confirm which albums upload, whether uploads run as expected, and how the chosen app handles local deletion and server removal. For PhotoPrism, test the compatible third-party uploader; for Nextcloud Photos or Memories, use the Nextcloud mobile app.
  4. Keep Apple Photos deletion behavior in mind. If iCloud Photos remains enabled, do not assume that clearing an iPhone’s local storage only affects the phone. Immich specifically warns that deletion and Free Up Space can propagate through Apple’s two-way sync.
  5. Verify the library before changing your routine. Check that important photos and videos appear in the new library and that your independent backup is usable before relying on the new setup as your primary copy.

How to choose

  • Choose Immich if first-party phone uploads to your own server are the priority and you are prepared to manage server health and backups.
  • Choose PhotoPrism if organizing and searching a collection matters most and a separate phone-upload app is acceptable.
  • Choose Nextcloud Photos if you want photo access integrated with an existing or planned Nextcloud environment.
  • Choose Memories if you want a more photo-focused Nextcloud experience and can meet its server requirements.
  • Consider Ente if end-to-end encryption and a choice between hosted and self-hosted operation are central to your decision.
