Start with your public library, school, and local parks and recreation department: each may offer free or affordable ways for children to spend time with peers, explore interests, or join supervised after-school activities. The right fit depends on your child’s age, schedule, interests, transportation, and how much supervision you need. A “free” listing may still involve registration, limited spaces, supplies, or trip fees.
Start with supervised after-school programs
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention defines out-of-school time (OST) as “a supervised program that students can regularly attend when school is not in session.” These programs can take place at school campuses, focus on activities such as sports, arts, or STEM, or offer a mix of academic and enrichment activities. The CDC says about 7.7 million children in the U.S. go to after-school programs; the agency page does not identify the statistic’s underlying publication year. It also reports that evidence-based OST programs aimed at personal and social skills are linked with positive social behaviors. CDC: Out-of-School Time
Check school and city youth programs
Ask your school district about on-campus after-school care, activity clubs, and community partnerships. In New York City, the COMPASS program serves students in grades K–12 with offerings that may include homework help, arts, sports, STEAM, leadership activities, and safe spaces. Community-based organizations contracted by the city run the sites, so families need to find a nearby provider and confirm its current schedule and registration. COMPASS is a local program, not a nationwide entitlement. NYC COMPASS

Look at parks and recreation centers
City and county recreation departments may have drop-in play, sports, teen hours, arts, seasonal activities, or after-school programs. For example, Austin Parks and Recreation lists year-round free and low-cost youth and teen programs at parks and recreation centers. Its Summer Playground Program is a free drop-in activity for ages 4–12; the same page also lists teen art programming and mobile teen outreach. Availability and seasons are specific to Austin. Local options can differ in price and format. Alexandria, Virginia, lists its after-school Teen Club for students entering grades 6–9 at $199 for the 2026–27 school year, while its Green Teen Club is listed as free, with possible field-trip fees. The city also lists open recreation-center teen hours with activities including basketball and chess. These are Alexandria-specific listings, not typical or national prices. Alexandria youth programs

Use libraries, school clubs, and interest groups
Libraries and schools can be a good match when a child wants recurring contact around a shared interest rather than a full after-school program. Depending on the community, possibilities include reading, crafts, games, arts, or student-led clubs. Alexandria’s youth directory, for instance, lists a library knitting and crochet group and student-led clubs at a local high school. Ask whether the activity is open to your child’s age, whether drop-ins are welcome, and whether supplies or registration are required. Alexandria youth programs

Some branches also run free outreach activities. YMCA of Greater Seattle’s Y on the Fly brings food, enrichment activities, and sports or movement to neighborhood locations. The organization says participation is free, drop-in, and does not require YMCA membership; its FAQ says a parent or guardian should accompany children under five. These details apply to that local service, not every YMCA. YMCA of Greater Seattle: Y on the Fly
Compare the real cost and practical fit
Before choosing a program, compare more than the advertised fee. A free activity may have limited capacity or require a caregiver to stay, while a paid program may include regular supervision or a schedule that better fits your family. Use these questions when contacting a provider:
