Yes—but you may not need to replace everything. A free Microsoft account provides browser versions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, OneNote on the web, and 5 GB of OneDrive storage. That can cover everyday work without a subscription, though it does not provide the full desktop feature set. If you need offline desktop editing or rely on advanced Excel features, choose a different workflow only after checking it against your actual files.
Can I use Word, PowerPoint, Excel, OneDrive, and OneNote without paying Microsoft?
Yes. Microsoft’s free account option includes web versions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, plus 5 GB of OneDrive cloud storage. You need to sign in with a Microsoft account, and those named Office apps are web-only on the free tier. Microsoft describes paid plans as adding desktop apps, more storage, and other benefits. This is the least disruptive option if your priority is avoiding a subscription while continuing to work in familiar Microsoft apps. It is not a complete substitute for desktop Office: browser versions have feature limits, and the 5 GB OneDrive allowance may not hold all your files.
What can Microsoft’s free web apps do—and where do they fall short?
Word, PowerPoint, and Excel in a browser
Microsoft documents browser-based editing and collaboration for Office files, including real-time co-authoring in supported scenarios. But the web apps do not include every desktop capability. The practical question is whether the features in your own files are supported, not whether the app names look the same.

Excel is the clearest example. Excel for the web cannot create or run VBA macros. Microsoft says VBA-enabled workbooks can still be opened and edited in the web app without removing or corrupting the VBA, but a macro-dependent workflow cannot be run there. Microsoft also lists some advanced analysis, external-reference, offline-authoring, and security capabilities as unavailable in the web version. OneNote on the web
The free-web route also includes a OneNote browser experience. Microsoft lists features such as pages and sections, tags, search, and co-authoring, but some desktop capabilities—including OCR and certain inking tools—are not available in the same way. If your notes rely on those tools or on a specific desktop workflow, verify that the web version meets your needs before changing how you capture and organize notes.

OneDrive storage
The free Microsoft account includes 5 GB of online OneDrive storage. Whether that is enough depends on what you keep there, especially large attachments, photos, and work files. Check the storage shown in your account before moving other files into it; Microsoft’s plan comparison lists the allowance and paid-plan differences.

Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides offer another browser-based way to create documents, spreadsheets, and presentations. Google recommends using a compatible operating system and one of the two most recent versions of a supported browser for the best experience. Google Drive for desktop is available for listed Windows and macOS versions, but Google says it is not available for Linux. Linux users can access Drive on the web, but should not expect a native Drive desktop sync client based on Google’s stated requirements. The same support page provides the current platform details.
The available documentation does not establish a Google storage quota, a complete offline-editing setup, or feature-by-feature equivalence with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneDrive, and OneNote. Check your account’s current storage and Google’s own documentation for any offline features you plan to use. Do not assume that a Microsoft file with advanced formatting, formulas, macros, or links will behave identically after moving it to a different suite.

How should you choose a no-cost workflow?
Decide by the work you actually do, rather than trying to find one service that claims to replace five products. These checks identify the trade-offs that matter:

- Microsoft-file features: If your spreadsheets use VBA macros or advanced analysis, or your documents and presentations depend on specialized desktop features, keep a desktop-capable workflow until you have checked those files in the intended replacement.
- Collaboration and device support: Consider whether several people need to edit at once and whether the browsers and operating systems they use are supported. Microsoft documents real-time co-authoring for its web apps; Google publishes browser and Drive desktop requirements.
- Storage: Compare the files you need to keep online with the allowance available in your account. Microsoft’s documented free OneDrive allowance is 5 GB; verify the current terms and your own usage before moving files.
- Notes: Treat note-taking as its own decision. OneNote’s web version may be enough for pages, sections, tags, search, and shared work, but the cited documentation does not establish a single alternative that duplicates every OneNote feature.
A low-risk approach is to keep the originals, then try a few representative files and notes in the browser apps you are considering. Check formatting, formulas, links, collaboration, and any specialized tools you depend on before making a wholesale change. If the free Microsoft web versions handle your routine work, there may be no need to migrate at all.
