For free US VIN decoding and manufacturer-reported vehicle specifications, start with NHTSA’s vPIC API. NHTSA also offers separate recall and complaint data. These services can cover identification and public safety-record needs, but they do not provide the same kind of diagnostic causes, likely fixes, predicted failures, or repair-cost information described by CarMD. Current CarMD API endpoints, coverage, pricing, and access terms are not established in the available documentation.
Choose an alternative by the data you need
“Vehicle data” can mean anything from a VIN’s make and model to a likely repair and its cost. Those are different data jobs, so no single free option identified here replaces CarMD across the board.
| Option | Best fit | Important limits | Access and cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| NHTSA vPIC API | VIN decoding and manufacturer-submitted vehicle information | Primarily intended for model year 1981 onward and vehicles intended for US sale or import; it is not a repair-fix or repair-price database. | Free public use; no registration required. Automated traffic controls apply. NHTSA vPIC API |
| vPIC standalone database | Local or offline VIN decoding | The standalone database supports VIN decoding only; use API calls for other vehicle attributes. | Downloadable from NHTSA. The page identifies a September 19, 2026 release. NHTSA vPIC database and API |
| NHTSA recalls and complaints | Public recall and safety complaint records | Records are not individualized diagnosis, predicted repairs, or repair estimates. | Public API and dataset documentation. NHTSA datasets and APIs |
| CarMD API | Potentially broader aftermarket diagnostic, repair, parts, and cost information | Current endpoints, coverage, access terms, and pricing are not verified. | CarMD currently names an API service, but present commercial details are not established. CarMD |
| OBD-II diagnostic adapter | Reading diagnostic data from a vehicle you can physically access | Requires compatible hardware and software; it is not a hosted vehicle-data API or a repair-history database. | CarMD describes a Bluetooth dongle that plugs into a vehicle’s OBD-II port. CarMD |
Use NHTSA vPIC for free VIN decoding and specifications
NHTSA’s Product Information Catalog and Vehicle Listing API (vPIC) is the strongest documented free starting point for a developer who needs to decode VINs or retrieve manufacturer-reported vehicle details. Its catalog is built from information submitted by vehicle manufacturers. NHTSA describes coverage for model years 1981 forward and vehicles intended for sale or importation into the United States; older VIN standards and vehicles outside that context may not decode or may return limited information. The catalog includes passenger vehicles, trucks, buses, trailers, incomplete vehicles, low-speed vehicles, and motorcycles, subject to those reporting and market limits. See NHTSA’s vPIC documentation.
The API supports multiple output formats and batch VIN decoding. The official API landing page search result identified version 4.06 and a June 13, 2026 code change; treat those as a dated snapshot, not a guarantee that the API will remain at that version. Check the live documentation and response fields before building an integration.

Access and high-volume use
NHTSA says vPIC is free for public use and requires no registration. That does not mean traffic is unlimited: automated controls apply. NHTSA’s FAQ describes handling 1,000–2,000 transactions per minute during a normal weekday as a capacity statement, not a service-level guarantee. For large batch jobs, NHTSA asks users to schedule them during off-peak periods. NHTSA vPIC FAQ.
When to use the local database
If your workload is primarily VIN decoding and you want to avoid API quotas or rate limits, NHTSA offers a downloadable standalone database for local use. Its scope is narrower than the API: NHTSA explicitly limits the standalone copy to VIN decoding. For other makes, models, or vehicle attributes, use the API. The download page lists a September 19, 2026 release. Get the standalone database and documentation.

Use NHTSA recalls and complaints for public safety records
NHTSA’s API and dataset catalog also covers recalls and consumer complaints. Complaint lookup can use make, model, and model year. These records can help an application surface reported safety issues, but they do not tell a driver what caused a particular trouble code, predict a vehicle’s next failure, or estimate an individual repair bill. Verify the current endpoint contract and response fields in NHTSA’s catalog before implementation: NHTSA datasets and APIs.

CarMD’s 2020 announcement described its Vehicle Health Index as based on reported failures and repairs related to OBD-II systems, with input from vehicle owners and service professionals and ASE-certified technician validation. It mentioned APIs and vehicle-data licensing at that time. That historical announcement does not confirm current API availability, feature parity, pricing, or terms. CarMD’s company site.
CarMD’s developer-facing page also publishes figures of 40 million vehicle-health scans each year, 17,000+ affiliate automotive retail outlets, and 20 years of real-world vehicle diagnostic data. CarMD does not state a measurement method or provide independent corroboration alongside those figures, so they should be treated as company-published claims rather than independently verified metrics. When an OBD-II adapter makes sense
A Bluetooth OBD-II adapter can be useful when you have access to the vehicle and want to read its own diagnostic data through compatible software. It is a vehicle-side workflow: the dongle plugs into the car’s OBD-II port. It does not provide general fleet or VIN data from a hosted API, and it is not a substitute for CarMD’s proprietary repair information. Confirm that the adapter and app support your vehicle before buying or integrating them.

How to decide
- Need a VIN decoded or manufacturer-reported specifications? Start with vPIC; use its local database if VIN decoding at scale is your main task.
- Need public recalls or complaint records? Use NHTSA’s separate recall and complaint datasets, and validate the current API contract.
- Need trouble-code explanations, likely fixes, parts, predicted failures, or repair costs? vPIC and NHTSA safety records do not establish those features. Confirm CarMD’s current API capabilities and commercial terms directly before treating it as an option.
- Need data from a car in front of you? Consider a compatible OBD-II adapter, understanding that it reads vehicle-side data rather than serving as a general API.
