Free AI hashtag generators can turn a description of your post into tag ideas, but they do not guarantee that a hashtag is trending or that your post will get more reach. Buffer offers suggestions for six social platforms; Canva and Sprinklr describe Instagram-focused tools. Choose based on your platform, inputs, language needs and free-use limit, then check every suggestion before publishing.
What an AI hashtag generator does
An AI hashtag generator uses the topic or post details you provide to suggest hashtags. Think of its output as a brainstorming list, not a live popularity report: a generated tag may be relevant without being popular, and it may be inappropriate for your specific post.
Meta’s guide says Meta AI cannot directly access real-time hashtag post-volume figures. Unless a tool documents a live data source, treat generated suggestions as ideas rather than evidence that a tag is currently trending.
Free AI hashtag generators compared
| Tool | Platform and inputs | Published free-use limit | Useful detail |
|---|---|---|---|
| Buffer | Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, X, YouTube and Facebook. Enter a topic or post, choose a platform, and optionally specify a niche and number of tags. | Up to five generations per day without an account, according to Buffer’s live product page checked October 7, 2026. | Buffer says a selected set can be sent to its scheduling workflow. |
| Canva | Instagram suggestions through Magic Write; enter a prompt, review ideas, then edit and add chosen tags to a post, reel or story. | Canva states that Free users get 50 lifetime Magic Write uses. Its page lists up to 500 uses per user per billing month for Pro, Teams, Nonprofits, and Education Admin/Teachers plans. | Canva says the generator supports up to 20 languages. |
| Sprinklr | Instagram. Provide a post description, audience description and tone. | Up to five prompts, according to Sprinklr’s live product page checked October 7, 2026. | Sprinklr promotes reach, engagement and accuracy benefits; these are vendor claims, not independently established results. |
Limits and features above are statements on the vendors’ live pages, checked October 7, 2026. They can change, so confirm the current terms on the linked page before relying on a cap.

How to get more relevant suggestions
- Describe the actual post. Include what it shows or says, rather than entering only a broad topic. For example, describe a beginner’s guide to repotting a small indoor herb, not just “gardening.”
- Name the platform. A tag that fits one network may not suit another. Buffer lets you select among its supported platforms; Canva and Sprinklr present Instagram-focused workflows.
- Add useful constraints. Specify the niche, intended audience, location or tone when it matters. Ask for a defined number of ideas and, if helpful, a mix of broad topic tags and narrower community terms.
- Review and edit the list. Remove any tag that misrepresents the content, audience, location or campaign. Meta’s guide recommends detailed prompts and human review; Canva also recommends editing suggestions. Meta AI for Business puts the final responsibility plainly: “While Meta AI is a great brainstorming tool, remember that the final call is yours.”
- Check activity if recency matters. Search the platform or inspect its hashtag feeds to see whether a tag is being used in a relevant way. A generator alone does not establish current volume.
How many hashtags should you use?
There is no universal count established here for Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, X, YouTube and Facebook alike. The tools may let you request a number, but that setting controls the suggestions returned; it is not proof of the ideal number for a post. Follow current guidance for the specific platform and prioritize tags that accurately describe your content.
Do hashtags still work?
These sources do not establish that hashtags reliably increase impressions or engagement, nor do they provide an independently validated performance statistic. Hashtags can still serve as descriptive labels and discovery terms, but whether a particular tag helps depends on the platform, post and audience. Treat claims of guaranteed reach or engagement as unproven unless supported by evidence beyond a generator’s marketing.

From suggestions to publishing
Once you have checked the tags, add the relevant ones to your post using the platform’s publishing workflow. If you plan posts in advance, Buffer says its selected hashtags can be sent into Buffer for scheduling. Scheduling is an optional next step; it does not validate whether a tag is popular or appropriate.
