France says it will increase its support for the Ebola response in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), but the amount, funding channel, recipients and timing of the new contribution have not been disclosed. The announcement comes as officials warn that the outbreak could resurge if vigilance falls.
What France announced—and what remains unknown
On October 3, 2026, Reuters reported that French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot said France would step up its support for efforts to eradicate Ebola in eastern DRC. The report paraphrased his warning that the disease could return quickly if vigilance waned; it did not provide a direct quotation or figures for the new support. Reuters report republished by Internazionale.
As of that report, it was not stated how much France would provide, whether the support would be cash or in-kind aid, who would receive it, or when it would be delivered. The announcement therefore signals an intended increase, not a quantified funding pledge.

France had provided a documented shipment to Ituri province before the new announcement. The French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs said 20 tonnes of aid arrived on July 7, 2026, routed through its Centre de crise et de soutien and delivered to three French NGOs working on the response. Why the outbreak raises concern
The World Health Organization identifies the outbreak as Bundibugyo virus disease, an Ebola disease caused by a distinct Ebola virus species. WHO says the outbreak in DRC was detected in May 2026 and expanded rapidly. That distinction matters: vaccines used against other Ebola species should not be presented as an available, outbreak-specific Bundibugyo vaccine. In the absence of a specific vaccine or treatment, prevention, surveillance and access to health services remain important parts of the response. The sources do not provide a current case count or a quantified estimate of resurgence risk.

How the announced support fits the wider response
France’s foreign ministry said on October 1 that Barrot would travel to DRC, including Bunia in Ituri, to reinforce bilateral relations and demonstrate France’s commitment to the Ebola response. A ministry spokesperson said the visit would be an opportunity “to demonstrate France’s commitment to the response to Ebola and to strengthen our support.” France Diplomatie briefing, October 1, 2026.

Separately, the DRC Prime Minister’s office reported that the government had mobilized US$50 million for its national Ebola response plan. The page is dated August 26, 2026, while its body gives a June 17 dateline, so the timing of that report is inconsistent. What to watch for next
The key unanswered detail is how France will turn its stated increase into operational support. A later announcement would clarify the amount, whether it is financial or in-kind, the organizations or authorities receiving it, and the delivery schedule. France’s October 1 briefing also said Barrot was scheduled to open a national humanitarian conference in Paris on October 6; that date was a plan announced in advance, not confirmation that the event took place.
