Four men arrested in Ireland on suspicion of market abuse were released without charge, the Irish Examiner reported on 1 October 2026. Gardaí said investigations were ongoing and that a file would be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP). The report does not say whether the DPP later received or acted on a file.

What happened

According to the Irish Examiner’s 1 October report, Gardaí arrested four men over two days in an investigation described as suspected insider dealing. The men were released without charge. The report described them by age only and did not identify them.

  • On Tuesday, Gardaí arrested two men, described as being in their 70s and 50s.
  • On Wednesday, they arrested two more men, described as being in their 60s and 50s.
  • All four were detained at Garda stations in the east of the country under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.
  • The first two men were released before the later arrests; the second pair were released on Thursday morning.

What the investigation concerns

The arrests were reported as being on suspicion of market abuse contrary to Regulation 5 of the European Union (Market Abuse) Regulations 2016. The report says the investigation concerns suspected insider dealing. These are allegations under investigation, not a finding that any of the men committed an offence.

The Irish Examiner reported that work by the Central Bank of Ireland led to a formal referral to the Garda National Economic Crime Bureau (GNECB) under Section 33AK of the Central Bank Act 1942. Central Bank personnel assisted the GNECB investigation. The report does not disclose the transactions, companies or securities being examined.

What happens next

The report said Gardaí would prepare a file for the DPP in both instances and quoted a Garda spokesperson: “Investigations are ongoing.” That describes the position as of the report’s publication on 1 October 2026; it does not establish that the DPP subsequently received or acted on a file, or whether charges were later brought.

Being released without charge means no charge was brought at that point. It is not, by itself, proof of guilt or exoneration. The men’s identities and the eventual outcome are not established in the report.
