In my setup, four Chrome automation processes were disrupting the browser I used interactively, so I separated the automation target by app identity and added a six-hour check to my recovery design. Those numbers describe my incident—not a general macOS diagnosis or an Apple-recommended schedule. The important distinction is that a bundle identifier names an app identity, but does not always select the exact installed build; process metadata can help identify what is running, but does not by itself explain why the processes affected another browser.

What bundle-ID targeting can—and cannot—separate

Apple’s UI automation API lets an Xcode UI test create an XCUIApplication proxy with a bundle identifier. That is useful when the test should target Chrome by app identity rather than rely on an ambiguous launch choice. But it is not a guarantee that a particular copied build will launch: macOS can have multiple builds of one app, and if the test scheme does not provide a matching build, Launch Services chooses the default build for that identifier. Apple’s XCUIApplication documentation describes this behavior.

For a test that must use a specific Chrome build, check the test scheme’s app selection and confirm which build Launch Services will resolve. Bundle-ID targeting answers “which app identity?”; it does not necessarily answer “which copy on disk?” If you need deterministic build selection, use the test configuration or launch arrangement that explicitly identifies the intended build, then verify the running app’s bundle URL rather than assuming the identifier is enough.

How to verify which app is running

On macOS, AppKit’s NSRunningApplication can find running apps by bundle identifier and expose useful diagnostic metadata, including bundle URL, process identifier (PID), and launch date. Logging those values gives a monitor evidence about the app identity, the bundle location, and when the observed app launched. See Apple’s NSRunningApplication documentation.

  • Bundle identifier: confirms the app identity reported by the running application.
  • Bundle URL: helps distinguish which app bundle is running when multiple builds are present.
  • Launch date: helps correlate a launch with an automation run or recovery action.
  • PID: helps address or log a current process, but is not a durable identity.

Apple specifically warns developers not to rely on PID equality to compare processes; compare NSRunningApplication instances with isEqual: instead. A PID can be reused after a process exits, so a saved number should not be treated as proof that the same app instance is still running. Metadata narrows down what is present; it does not establish the root cause of interference between automation and an interactive browser.

Choose a supervisor that matches the browser’s lifecycle

A recovery loop should have an owner and a clear scope. Apple distinguishes login items, per-user launch agents, and system-level launch daemons. A launch agent runs on behalf of the logged-in user, which is generally the relevant session for controlling that user’s GUI browser. A launch daemon runs at system scope; it is not automatically the right choice for a browser workflow tied to one person’s desktop. A login item is another mechanism for an app launched at login. Apple outlines these distinctions in its Service Management documentation.

Approach Typical fit Lifecycle consideration
Foreground app’s helper Work that should exist only while the controlling app is open Ensure it stops when the app quits, or give the person control over it.
XPC service Helper work managed around requests from an app Apple says launchd can start XPC services on demand, stop them when idle, and restart them after a crash.
Per-user launch agent Persistent or independently managed work within the logged-in user’s session Its behavior should fit the user session and the target macOS version.
System launch daemon Work that genuinely needs system-wide scope Its broader scope is usually unnecessary for controlling one user’s GUI browser.
Login item An app intended to launch when a person logs in It is distinct from a launch agent or launch daemon.

Apple’s current guidance is direct: “For apps that provide background processing of any kind, it’s the responsibility of all apps to terminate any background processing when the app quits, or make it possible for a person to do so.” Its guidance on managing background processes on Mac discusses sending quit events to background apps and using XPC or a managed launch agent for appropriate helper designs. Choose the arrangement based on whether the work should end with the foreground app, run on demand, or persist in the user session.

What a six-hour repair check means

In my setup, six hours was the recovery-check interval I chose. It is not an Apple recommendation, a universal best practice, or a guarantee that a browser problem will be repaired. The reviewed Apple documentation establishes lifecycle options and app-selection behavior, not that a six-hour loop fixes this particular incident.

A monitor is more useful when it records what it observes and repairs only a defined condition. For example, log the target bundle identifier, bundle URL, launch date, and relevant current process instance; define what counts as an unhealthy state before acting; and make repeated failures visible rather than silently restarting forever. These are design choices for making the recovery behavior diagnosable, not proof that any one trigger or cadence will resolve every Chrome automation conflict.

Apple’s archived launchd guide discusses the KeepAlive key and notes that a process that exits too quickly repeatedly can be considered to be respawning too fast. Because that guide is archived, verify plist keys and failure behavior against current documentation and the macOS version you support before relying on them.

A practical isolation and recovery checklist

  1. Identify the intended app. Use the app’s bundle identifier in the UI automation target.
  2. Pin down the build. If more than one build is installed, check the test scheme’s selected app and the Launch Services default behavior for that identifier.
  3. Observe the running instance. Record its bundle URL and launch date alongside the bundle identifier. Do not use a PID alone as persistent identity.
  4. Set the right owner. Tie short-lived work to the foreground app, use XPC for suitable on-demand helper work, or choose a per-user launch agent if the job must persist in that user’s session.
  5. Make recovery inspectable. Define a failure condition, log each check and action, and surface repeated failures. Treat the six-hour interval as a configuration choice for this setup, not a platform rule.
