You can reset found AirPods using the steps for their model, but a reset does not remove them from the previous owner’s Apple Account or let you pair them with a new account for Find My. If the AirPods are still linked, ask the previous owner to remove them from Find My. If you can reasonably contact the owner, arrange to return them.
Identify the model before resetting
Apple’s current reset guide covers AirPods 1, 2, 3, AirPods 4 (all models), AirPods 5 (both models), and AirPods Pro 1, 2, and 3. The reset method depends on the case: older listed models use a setup button on the back, while AirPods 4, AirPods 5, and AirPods Pro 3 use taps on the front. Do not assume every case has a rear setup button. See Apple’s model-specific reset instructions.
Reset the AirPods
AirPods 1, 2, or 3; AirPods Pro 1 or 2
- Put both AirPods in their charging case, close the lid, and wait 30 seconds.
- On a paired iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Bluetooth. If the AirPods appear under My Devices, tap the More Info button next to them, choose Forget This Device, and confirm. If they are not listed, continue.
- Open the case lid. Press and hold the setup button on the back of the case for about 15 seconds.
- Wait for the status light to flash amber and then white. Follow the on-screen prompts if you are reconnecting them.
AirPods 4, AirPods 5, or AirPods Pro 3
- Put both AirPods in their charging case, close the lid, and wait 30 seconds.
- On a paired iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Bluetooth. If the AirPods appear under My Devices, tap the More Info button next to them, choose Forget This Device, and confirm. If they are not listed, continue.
- Open the case lid. Double-tap the front of the case while the status light is on, double-tap again when it flashes white, then double-tap a third time when it flashes faster.
- When the light flashes amber and then white, follow the on-screen prompts if you are reconnecting them.
If the light does not flash white
Close the case for 20 seconds, then repeat the appropriate model-specific button or tap sequence, following Apple’s reset guide.

Resetting restores local pairing behavior; it does not clear Find My Lock or transfer the AirPods to you. AirPods can be associated with one Apple Account at a time for Find My. Apple says the previous owner must remove them from their account before you can pair them with a new account. Apple also says it cannot remove Find My Lock for the previous owner. Ask the previous owner to remove them
Ask the previous owner to remove the AirPods from their Apple Account in Find My. Apple provides removal steps for iPhone or iPad, Mac, and iCloud.com. Removing them from one device is enough; being connected by Bluetooth and within range may make the process faster. Once the owner removes the account association, try pairing again.
If you cannot reach the previous owner
Do not rely on a reset to unlock the AirPods. Apple says resetting can prevent them from sharing their location with the previous owner when removal is not possible, but they still cannot be paired with a new Apple Account until the old association is removed. Apple states, “Apple can’t remove Find My Lock for you.”

Consider returning the AirPods
If there is a reasonable way to contact the owner, arrange to return the earbuds rather than trying to claim them. Apple’s Find My guidance for lost AirPods explains locating AirPods and Lost Mode or contact information. Available features vary by model and region. If the AirPods are offline, Find My may show only their last-known location, and sound or nearby finding may not be available until they come online.
