There is no single best Fortress Saga hero order for every player: rankings vary by game mode, region, and update, while your available heroes and promotion materials shape what you can use. Use tier lists to identify candidates, then compare their roles, skills, and synergy for the activity you want to clear.
How to read a Fortress Saga tier list
Tier placements are guide judgments, not measured win rates or guaranteed outcomes. Check the list’s date, game version, region, and mode before using it to plan upgrades. The English Global-focused guide below is a broad ranking, while the newer Japanese guide divides rankings by activity; they should not be combined into one definitive order.
English guide: Global server, version 2.1.02
Pocket Gamer says its English guide is adapted from the Japanese version for the Global server. It is based on version 2.1.02, was updated September 16, 2026, and identifies Anubis as its latest addition. Its S+ tier includes Anubis, Yuyan, Ryo, Beatrice, Violet, Malleus, Ruingaladh, Styria, Iris, Ungula, Mael, Mephisto, Luna, Iblis, Milena, Kahula, Laios, Marcille, Chilchuck, Tails, and Gildong. Its S tier includes Water Mage, Hoya, Darcille, Winter, Zelos, Jibril, Valentine, Rei, Yaksha, Metal, Senshi, Sonic, Knuckles, Shadow, and Louis. Kamigame’s Japanese ranking, updated October 6, 2026, separates PvE stages, PvE bosses, and PvP. Its highest PvE stage tier includes Violet, Ruingaladh, Iris, Lan Hua, and Young Solum, among others; it evaluates featured hero Lumiel separately across modes. That scope differs from the broad English chart, so check the ranking for your target mode rather than assuming one list applies everywhere. Why skills and roles matter more than a tier label
Fortress Saga’s official listing describes defenders, damage dealers, tanks, and support units, with team synergies as part of combat. A hero’s contribution may depend on a trait condition or interaction with allies, so check the actual passive and skills instead of choosing from rank alone. See the official Google Play listing.
The English guide illustrates different kinds of value: Violet summons Shadow Soldiers and benefits from other heroes’ stat boosts; Malleus groups enemies and buffs Machina-trait allies; Styria heals, shields, and passively raises team HP. Winter deals area damage, can knock enemies back, and freezes a target after repeated hits. Zelos combines damage and control, including a boss stun, while Jibril is described as a burst damage dealer against single or multiple targets. These are the guide’s descriptions, not independent test results.

Rarity, access, and promotion costs
A high-ranked hero is not automatically the most useful choice for your account if you cannot obtain or promote that hero yet. Pocket Gamer notes that players may need to upgrade lower-rarity heroes, and Kamigame’s beginner guide offers Hoya and Louis as examples for a small starting roster: Hoya is described as helping with fortress enhancement and healing, while Louis has area attacks and a skill-cooldown benefit. These are examples, not a universal starter team. See Kamigame’s beginner guide.
Kamigame’s promotion guide says promotion uses duplicate hero copies and Amplification Crystals. Its table reports the following total copy and crystal requirements through five stars. The guide was last updated May 18, 2026, so confirm exact current costs in the game if they will determine an investment.

Kamigame says crystals can come from stage and quest rewards and describes pickup or selection summons as ways to improve the chance of obtaining a chosen duplicate. See Kamigame’s promotion guide.
How to build a team for your account
- Choose the activity first. Decide whether you are building for PvE stages, a boss, or PvP. Wave clearing, boss utility, and PvP control can reward different skills; the Japanese guide’s separate rankings make that distinction explicit.
- Compare each hero’s job and interactions. Identify the damage, defense, control, healing, or buff a hero supplies, then check any trait requirement or ally synergy in that hero’s skills.
- Factor in availability and promotion. Consider which heroes you own, how many duplicate copies you can reasonably obtain, and the crystal cost for promotion. A hero you can field and advance may be a practical bridge while a higher-ranked option is unavailable.
- Account for progression. Recommendations can change as systems unlock. Kamigame’s beginner guide points to later systems such as Harmony Sanctum, so assess your current account stage rather than copying advice meant for a different point in progression.
- Reassess when the roster or target changes. Revisit the lineup when you unlock heroes or systems, or switch from stages to bosses or PvP. The best fit cannot be determined without your roster, progression, and chosen activity.
What is established—and what is not
The available tier guides provide dated rankings and qualitative descriptions, but they do not establish authoritative win rates, usage rates, or comparative performance statistics. The official Google Play listing describes Fortress Saga as a free idle RPG with auto-battle, offline progression, hero and fortress upgrades, summons, team synergies, dungeons, and PvP.
