For a beginner in Fortress Saga, the best heroes to build are usually the strong heroes you already own—not a fixed five-character lineup. Start with a dependable damage dealer, then add healing, shields, control, or buffs to cover what your team lacks. Your best choice also depends on whether you are clearing stages, fighting bosses, or playing PvP.
Pocket Gamer’s global-facing tier list, updated September 16, 2026 for version 2.1.02, ranks Violet, Styria, and Malleus in S+. Those are useful heroes to watch for, not proof that they form a universally best beginner team. How beginners should choose heroes
Build around your actual roster and the activity you want to clear. A high tier-list placement is useful context, but it does not tell you whether a hero is available to you, affordable to improve, or suited to your current obstacle.

Pocket Gamer cautions that new players may not have its top-ranked heroes and may need to invest in lower-rarity options.
- Cover complementary roles. Look for damage plus survival or support, then consider whether control or buffs would help. A lineup with several damage dealers may struggle if it cannot stay alive; a durable lineup may clear slowly if it lacks damage.
- Choose for the activity. Stage clearing, boss fights, and PvP can reward different strengths. Kamigame’s Japanese ranking page separates ratings for PvE stages, PvE bosses, and PvP rather than treating them as one universal ranking. Kamigame’s Fortress Saga character rankings
- Check the ranking’s date and context. Updates and regional coverage matter. Pocket Gamer’s list is version 2.1.02 and says it adapts information from the more mature Japanese server for global players; its broad tier labels should not be directly combined with Kamigame’s mode-specific grades.
Strong heroes to look for
Pocket Gamer’s version 2.1.02 list places these three heroes in S+. Their abilities suggest ways they can contribute to a team, but the source does not establish that they are a tested, fixed lineup.

- Tien: The poster describes Tien as a buffer who is close to a damage dealer in output.
The post says neither hero depends heavily on a unique weapon, though the weapon still helps. It suggests selecting a missing hero from its top two tiers or choosing a duplicate that would raise a hero to two stars. It also warns that gems become scarce after beginner missions. Because those points come from a single community post, use them as considerations rather than guarantees about current draw value or resource availability.
Should you reroll for a top-tier hero?
Not by default. Pocket Gamer advises that rerolling is not worth the lost progress because the best heroes are not initially accessible. That is the guide’s recommendation, not a game rule; weigh it against your own tolerance for restarting and the heroes available to you.

Why published rankings differ
Tier lists can reflect different dates, rosters, regions, and evaluation methods. Pocket Gamer’s September 16, 2026 list is a broad global-facing ranking for version 2.1.02. Kamigame’s October 6, 2026 Japanese page gives separate rankings for PvE stages, PvE bosses, and PvP, so its grades answer a more specific question. A MobileMatters list published in August 2026 places Winter, Ruingaladh, Ravia, and Elizabeth in S-tier, illustrating that lists can differ; it is not a substitute for a mode-specific recommendation. When a ranking conflicts with your experience, prioritize the mode you are playing and the heroes you can actually develop. A hero’s broad tier label alone cannot settle which investment will help your account most.
