Fortnite’s Fortnitemares 2026 puts Freddy Krueger in the game as a boss: defeat him at Nightmare Neighborhood to earn Freddy’s Nightmare, a teleport-and-slash item. Epic’s October 1 announcement also confirms the return of Horde Rush, new cursed gameplay modifiers and a slate of collaborations arriving during October.
How Freddy Krueger appears in Fortnitemares
Freddy is an in-game encounter, not just a shop outfit. Epic says players can find him at Freaky Fields or the new Nightmare Neighborhood POI. Defeating him awards Freddy’s Nightmare, which lets its holder teleport into range and slash an opponent. Epic’s October 1 announcement describes the item’s function; it does not establish that the boss encounter is the same thing as buying Freddy’s cosmetics.
What gameplay is changing
Battle Royale and cursed modifiers
Fortnitemares reaches Battle Royale, Horde Rush and Reload. New loot includes the Bonerattler SMG and cursed cartridge Overrides. Depending on the effect, Overrides can make a player invisible while sprinting, increase damage at low health, or disguise the squad as Halloween props. Epic has not specified individual release dates for each collaboration or item in its event outline.
Horde Rush and Reload
Horde Rush returns as a limited-time mode. Epic’s Communities post says an updated Nitemare Island arrives in Reload on October 8. The post also lists returning weapons: the Wood Stake Shotgun, Dual Fiend Hunters, Witch Broom and Heavy Assault Rifle. See Epic’s Communities post for its mode and loot details.

Which Fortnitemares collaborations are confirmed?
Epic’s October 1 announcement names Five Nights at Freddy’s, Hazbin Hotel, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Beetlejuice and Obsession among the collaborations bringing new characters during October. It also says outfits and accessories from the following properties will arrive throughout the month:
- A Nightmare on Elm Street
- Black Clover
- Hollow Knight
- 99 Nights in the Forest
- Hazbin Hotel
- The Purge
- Obsession
- Slender Man
- Beetlejuice
- Predator: Badlands
- Universal Studios’ Halloween Horror Nights
“Throughout October” is the timing Epic gives for that broader set of outfits and accessories; the announcement does not assign each one a specific launch date.

Can a gift card pay for Freddy’s Fortnite cosmetics?
Yes. Epic says V-Bucks can be used for Outfits, Pickaxes, Emotes, Wraps and Passes, so a Fortnite gift card or V-Bucks card can fund eligible cosmetics. The card is payment credit, not physical Freddy or Fortnitemares merchandise.
Epic announced in June 2025 that new Fortnite gift cards would be sold at retailers and could fund V-Bucks, Crew and Packs. The new cards are replacing V-Bucks cards over time, with rollout varying by region. Check Epic’s V-Bucks card information and gift-card announcement for current availability and redemption details. Retail V-Bucks cards are redeemed through an Epic account, and some territories restrict cards to accounts in the matching region. Also check platform wallet rules: Nintendo balances have different sharing limitations from supported shared-wallet platforms.
