Fortnite Crew is usually the better choice if you’ll use its monthly Crew Pack and premium pass access as well as the 800 V-Bucks grant. Buying V-Bucks is better if you want one specific skin, want a one-time spend, or don’t want a subscription. The key is to count only benefits you’ll actually use: Crew’s pass access and cosmetics are not a cash refund.

How Fortnite Crew and V-Bucks compare

Option What you get Best fit
Fortnite Crew 800 V-Bucks each month the subscription is active, a monthly exclusive Crew Pack, and premium access to the passes Epic currently lists. Benefits can change; check Epic’s current Crew benefits. Players who want the current Crew Pack, will use included premium pass benefits, and are comfortable with monthly renewal.
Buy V-Bucks A chosen amount of currency for eligible purchases, without subscribing to Crew. Epic’s US Epic Games Store currently lists 800 for $8.99, 2,400 for $22.99, 4,500 for $36.99, and 12,500 for $89.99. These are US storefront prices, not universal prices; check the Epic Games Store listing for the relevant storefront. Players targeting a particular Item Shop purchase or avoiding recurring charges and unwanted extras.

The current Battle Royale Battle Pass costs 800 V-Bucks from March 19, 2026, the same nominal amount as one month of Crew’s currency grant. That comparison does not make Crew’s other benefits automatically worth their cost: they matter only if you want and use them. See Epic’s Battle Royale Battle Pass pricing.

When Fortnite Crew is the better choice

Crew makes more sense when you are already playing regularly and value the current month’s exclusive Crew Pack or premium access to one or more of the passes included in the offer. Its 800 V-Bucks grant provides a clear currency baseline, while the pack and pass access are additional benefits—not money you can recover if you do not want them.

  • Gift card must be redeemed at EpicGames.com/redeem. This gift card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly on a console device (PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, etc.)
  • If you play Fortnite experiences on a console device, you need to link your Epic Games account to your console account(s) so items purchased at Fortnite.com/item-shop appear across all of your linked accounts

  • Redemption: Online

When buying V-Bucks is better for skins

Buy V-Bucks directly if you have a specific Item Shop skin in mind, do not care about the current Crew Pack or included pass benefits, or want to control spending without an automatically renewing subscription. Check the price of the item you want in your own shop before buying: the supplied official pricing establishes V-Bucks pack prices, not a guaranteed price for any particular skin.

Direct purchases are not the only way to get currency. Epic says players can obtain V-Bucks through Free Pass or Battle Pass progression, packs, and physical V-Bucks cards. Physical cards are sold through authorized retailers and online; availability and redemption rules depend on the card and account. See Epic’s guides on getting V-Bucks in Battle Royale and V-Bucks cards.

What to check before subscribing or buying

  • How long you expect to subscribe: Crew is recurring and renews until cancelled. Compare the expected number of paid months with the one-time amount of V-Bucks you need; do not assume you will keep paying only once.
  • Whether you want this month’s extras: Count a Crew Pack or premium pass only if you would actually use it. Pass access is not equivalent to currency that can be spent on a skin.
  • Which platform you play on: Epic says V-Bucks purchased through the Epic Games Store cannot be used on Nintendo Switch. Crew terms also warn that its V-Bucks may not be redeemable on platforms other than the subscription’s primary platform. Confirm the applicable details in Epic’s Crew terms and the relevant store before paying.
  • Where a physical card was issued: Epic’s card terms say cards distributed in one country may be redeemable only by accounts registered in that country. Check the Epic Games End User License Agreement and card instructions for the applicable restrictions.

What happens if you cancel Fortnite Crew?

Crew renews until cancelled. If you cancel, benefits remain available through the end of the current billing period; Epic’s subscription terms say content received or earned is retained. Battle Pass premium rewards have a separate access rule: subscribers who joined after December 1, 2024 need an active Crew subscription to claim those rewards. Do not assume cancelling preserves premium reward access after the billing period. Epic explains the details in its Crew and Battle Pass access guidance.

A simple way to decide

  1. Name the purchase. If you only want one skin, look at its current Item Shop price and compare it with the V-Bucks packs available in your region and platform.
  2. Value Crew’s extras honestly. Decide whether you want the current Crew Pack and would use the included premium pass access. Leave out benefits you would not choose on their own.
  3. Account for renewal. If you choose Crew, include the number of months you expect to keep it and know how to cancel before the next billing date.
  4. Confirm platform and region compatibility. Store restrictions and card-country rules can affect where currency can be used or redeemed.

If the Crew cosmetics and pass access do not matter to you, buying the needed V-Bucks—or earning them through eligible progression—is the more direct route to a skin. If those extras do matter and you are happy with a recurring subscription, Crew can offer more than its monthly currency grant.
