“Unbound” means a control has no input assigned in the relevant mapping—but seeing that label is different from a control triggering the wrong action. Epic Games Support describes two separate Fortnite issues: Squad Comms appearing when a controller’s right D-pad is pressed in Battle Royale, and buttons appearing as “Unbound” in Festival Main Stage. Identify which symptom and mode you have before trying a fix.
First identify the mode and symptom
| Mode | Input and symptom | Remedy Epic suggests |
|---|---|---|
| Battle Royale | Controller: Squad Comms appears when you press the right D-pad, even though another action is assigned or the button is unbound. | Change the controller mapping, check for duplicate assignments, and save the settings. Epic Games Support’s Battle Royale instructions |
| Fortnite Festival Main Stage | Some buttons appear as “Unbound” in the keybinds. | Restart Fortnite; Epic says this may help restore keybinds temporarily. Epic Games Support’s Festival guidance |
These are distinct reported issues, not one universal “Unbound” problem. If your mode, input method, or symptom does not match either row, neither remedy is established as a fix for your case.
Battle Royale: Squad Comms fires from the right D-pad
Epic says it is aware of an issue in which Squad Comms can appear when a player presses the controller’s right D-pad—even when another action is assigned to that button or it is completely unbound. Epic described the issue as under investigation; its mapping steps are a temporary workaround, not a guaranteed fix.
- Open Fortnite’s in-game Settings.
- Go to Controller Mapping.
- Change the preset to Custom.
- Unbind “Squad Requests (Hold) / Augment select (Tap)” from the right D-pad.
- Bind a different command to the D-pad.
- Check the mapping for actions assigned to multiple inputs.
- Save before closing Settings.
If the unexpected Squad Comms behavior continues, the official guidance does not promise another remedy. Keep in mind that changing to a Custom preset alters the mapping; review the other controls before saving.

Festival Main Stage: buttons display “Unbound”
Epic separately says that some buttons may appear as “Unbound” in Fortnite Festival Main Stage and that it is investigating. Its interim suggestion is to restart Fortnite, which may help restore keybinds. This advice is specific to the Festival Main Stage display issue; it is not the published remedy for the Battle Royale D-pad behavior.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When neither case matches
Before changing controls, note the mode, whether you are using a controller or Festival keybinds, the affected control, and what happens when you use it. An unassigned-control label and an action firing unexpectedly are different symptoms. The official support information cited here does not establish a broader fix for every Fortnite mode, platform, or control.
