Fortinet announced and completed its acquisition of AccelOps on June 7, 2016. Fortinet said AccelOps’ network security monitoring and analytics solutions would become FortiSIEM and join its Security Fabric, extending monitoring and threat intelligence across multi-vendor infrastructure.

What happened in the Fortinet–AccelOps deal?

Fortinet described AccelOps as a provider of network security monitoring and analytics solutions. Its June 7, 2016 announcement said the acquisition was complete and effective immediately, and that AccelOps solutions would become FortiSIEM, part of Fortinet’s Security Fabric. Why did Fortinet acquire AccelOps?

Fortinet presented the deal as a way to extend the Security Fabric beyond its own security products. AccelOps software monitored security, performance, and compliance across local and virtualized infrastructure. Fortinet said its analytics and event correlation could provide visibility across multi-vendor environments and feed actionable intelligence into the Security Fabric for automated threat prevention.

In the announcement, Fortinet founder, chairman, and CEO Ken Xie described the aim as combining security and compliance monitoring with analytics across multi-vendor security solutions, from IoT to the cloud. AccelOps founder and CTO Partha Bhattacharya said the companies shared a vision of actionable security intelligence across IT infrastructure. These statements explain the companies’ rationale at the time; they are not independent assessments of product performance.

Service-provider strategy

Fortinet’s 2016 blog also positioned AccelOps for service-provider and multi-tenant use cases. That reflects Fortinet’s strategic positioning during the acquisition, rather than independent product testing. Fortinet’s 2016 blog post

Did AccelOps become FortiSIEM?

Yes. Fortinet said in 2016 that AccelOps solutions would become FortiSIEM. A 2026 Fortinet announcement still includes FortiSIEM among the capabilities in its security operations platform, supporting that the product name remains in Fortinet’s portfolio. Fortinet’s 2026 announcement

That reference does not, by itself, establish current licensing, features, deployment options, or support terms. Those details should be checked in current Fortinet product documentation before making a purchasing or deployment decision.

What did Fortinet pay for AccelOps?

Fortinet’s filings report consideration on different bases, so the figures should not be treated as interchangeable:

Filing Reported amount Basis stated
Form 8-K, June 7, 2016 Approximately $28 million, with up to $4 million more possible Cash paid, subject to adjustments; additional payment depended on future performance. Form 8-K, Item 8.01
2016 Form 10-K $22.1 million Total cash consideration, net of cash received. 2016 Form 10-K

The 8-K’s approximate cash payment and contingent amount are worded differently from the 10-K’s net-of-cash total. The figures therefore do not establish a single directly comparable purchase-price number, and the filings’ quoted amounts alone do not reconcile every adjustment.

How to read Fortinet’s breach statistics from 2016

Fortinet’s acquisition release included Ken Xie’s claim that 60% of security breaches resulted in stolen data starting within minutes and went undetected because of ineffective monitoring and event correlation. The reviewed release material does not identify an underlying study for that figure. Fortinet’s 2016 blog also claimed that more than 70% of cybersecurity breaches went undetected for months, likewise without identifying an underlying study in the reviewed source. These are contemporaneous company claims, not independently verified general statistics.
