The original Formovie THEATER is a 4K ultra-short-throw projector best suited to movies in a dim or dark room. RTINGS found convincing contrast in dark scenes, but also says the picture loses punch in brighter scenes, out-of-box color accuracy is inadequate, and input lag is very high. Its 60 Hz ceiling and missing native Netflix support are important trade-offs.
What the original Formovie THEATER offers
This review covers the original Formovie THEATER, not the later THEATER Premium. Formovie describes the original as a DLP projector with an ALPD laser light engine. Its listed specifications are manufacturer figures, not independent measurements.
| Specification | Formovie-listed value |
|---|---|
| Resolution | 3840 × 2160 (4K UHD) |
| Light output | 1,800 ISO lumens |
| Throw ratio | 0.23:1 |
| Recommended image size | 80–150 inches |
| Refresh rate | 60 Hz |
| Contrast ratio | 3,000:1 |
| Color gamut | 107% BT.2020 |
These specifications are from Formovie’s official product page, retrieved October 4, 2026. The 0.23:1 throw ratio is intended for ultra-short-throw placement: the projector sits close to the screen rather than across the room. Check the placement requirements for your intended image size before buying.

How it performs for movies
RTINGS describes the THEATER as a good fit for a dedicated or mostly dark room. It reports convincing contrast in dark scenes, where shadow detail and dark imagery can look engaging. As the image becomes brighter, however, blacks lift and the picture loses punch. In a moderately lit room, RTINGS says the image is not bright enough and can look washed out.
#1 Best Overall
- ✅ AWARD-WINNING PROJECTION: As 1st place winner & judge's pick at both the 2022 and 2023 Laser TV Showdown, among other accolades, the Formovie Theater 4K UST projector is truly best in its class.
- ✅ 1800 ISO Lumens, Crisp and Clear Anytime Vibrant and bright colors can be accessed easily during daylight or even with ambient lights on with 1800 ISO Lumens.
- ✅ Powered By Dolby Vision Equipped with extremely high 4K UHD resolution, 3000:1 FOFO Contrast ratio and the HDR 10+ Decoding, and support Dolby Vision, THEATER has perfect support for contents with high dynamic range.
- ✅ Dolby Atmos Whether you’re gaming, watching your favorite movie or show, THEATER's support of Dolby Atmos transports you into a spatial sound experience that draws you in deeper, so you hear more and feel more, from the dual 15W full-range audio.
- ✅ Endless Content with Android TV 11.0 Formovie is equipped with Certified Android TV 11.0, Google Play and Chromecast bring you a smoother entertainment experience on the large screen. It supports 5000+ APPs, like Disney+, HBO, Hulu and YouTube, bringing you endless entertainment contents
That makes room lighting central to the decision. If you can dim the room for films, the projector’s contrast is a strength. If you need a bright, impactful picture with ambient light present, the original THEATER is a weaker match; RTINGS notes that brighter ultra-short-throw alternatives can deliver a more impactful HDR picture, without establishing a current market-wide winner.
Color accuracy and calibration
RTINGS found the original’s color accuracy inadequate out of the box. Its wide color-gamut claim—107% BT.2020—is a Formovie specification, and should not be mistaken for a finding that colors are accurate without adjustment. Viewers who are sensitive to color accuracy may want to consider calibration. No particular calibration product or service is established here.

Gaming: limited by lag and 60 Hz
RTINGS calls the projector disappointing for gaming because its input lag is very high. Formovie lists a 60 Hz refresh rate, and RTINGS says there is no 120 Hz support. Formovie advertises ALLM and MEMC, but those features do not remove the reported lag or raise the 60 Hz ceiling. For latency-sensitive games or players who want high-refresh-rate support, this is a poor fit.
Streaming, Netflix, and 3D
Formovie says 3D is unsupported on the original THEATER. It also says Netflix is temporarily unavailable in the original model’s Android TV Store because of hardware compatibility, and recommends using an external media stick or box for Netflix. Formovie advertises Android TV 11, but buyers should distinguish that platform claim from the specific Netflix limitation.

- ✅ Triple Color Laser Technology - Developed by Appotronics, ALPD RGB+ 4.0 triple laser technology outperforms standard RGB lasers with vivid, accurate colors that enhance every scene. Its high light efficiency extends the laser lifespan to 30,000 hours, ensuring lasting brightness. Improved speckle suppression reduces noise and bright spots for a smoother, immersive viewing experience.
- ✅ Dolby Vision Expanded Content Support - Theater Premium still boasts Dolby Vision TM, but it's now upgraded to a higher level. It not only supports a wider range of Dolby Vision content but also handles the image well, providing easier access to cinematic viewing.
- ✅ 2200 ISO Lumens Boosted Brightness for Daytime Viewing - Theater Premium boosts brightness to 2200 ISO lumens while maintaining high contrast and color accuracy. This means you can enjoy family watching effortlessly, day or night.
- ✅ 0.21:1 Maximum Space. Minimum Distance - Positioning a laser TV and enjoying a super large screen is closely tied to its throw ratio, Theater Premium's throw ratio has been reduced to 0.21:l, outpacing the 0.23:1 mainstream in the market. This allows you to place the projector up to 14% closer to the wall while still projecting a massive 150" screen. Plus, the image height is reduced by 44%, giving you more flexibility with your setup, whether it's a shallow TV stand or a tight ceiling space.
- ✅ Google TV OS Everything You Stream All On One Screen - Google TV offers over 700,000 movies and TV episodes, live TV, and access to 10,000+ apps, organizing your favorite entertainment in one place. Want something specific? Just press the Google Assistant button on your remote and say, “Play the new Despicable Me prequel” for quick results from all your apps.
Original THEATER vs. THEATER Premium
THEATER Premium is a separate upgraded model, not a firmware version of the original. RTINGS lists these distinctions:
| Feature | Original THEATER | THEATER Premium |
|---|---|---|
| Light output | 1,800 ISO lumens (Formovie specification) | 2,200 ISO lumens (RTINGS comparison) |
| TV platform and Netflix | Android TV 11; native Netflix unavailable in the store, according to Formovie | Google TV with native Netflix, according to RTINGS |
| 3D | Unsupported, according to Formovie | Supported after a firmware update, according to RTINGS |
These model differences matter if you want greater listed brightness, built-in Netflix, or 3D. Check the Premium’s current firmware and availability before purchase; support for 3D is firmware-dependent.
