Former NYPD sergeant Atickul Islam pleaded guilty in Brooklyn federal court on September 30, 2026, to falsely impersonating a U.S. government officer or employee. Prosecutors said he threatened a Queens woman and her family with ICE action, then sent a separate message posing as the director of ICE’s New York Field Office. He has not yet been sentenced; sentencing was scheduled for March 24, 2027.
What prosecutors said Islam did
According to accounts of the court proceeding, Islam sent the woman a threatening text on March 29, 2025, from his personal phone. The New York Daily News reported that it read: “ICE will come get you and your family and you will always live poor. Matter of fact I will make the phone call myself,” followed by a threat referring to his knowledge of where her family lived. QNS reported that the messages were sent between March 22 and March 29, 2025.
About four hours after the threat, Islam allegedly used a different number to claim he was “James W. Anderson,” the director of ICE’s New York Field Office. The message directed the woman and her family to report to an ICE location and threatened further legal action and enforcement measures if they did not. QNS reported that the message presented itself as an official notice.
What Islam admitted in court
Islam pleaded guilty on September 30, 2026, to one count of false personation of an officer or employee of the U.S. government. The New York Daily News reported that during the plea he said: “I sent a text message impersonating a federal field office director of ICE, via a cell phone.” Inner City Press identifies the case as USA v. Islam, 25-cr-359, before Judge Dora L. Irizarry in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York.

News reports say law-enforcement sources described the woman as having rejected Islam’s romantic advances. U.S. Attorney Joseph Nocella characterized his conduct as using lies and the threat of deportation to take revenge on a woman in his personal life. The reports do not identify the woman.
Why the case drew official condemnation
Nocella said Islam had used “lies and the threat of deportation to take revenge on a woman in his personal life.” He added that prosecutors expect officers at every rank to act honestly and with integrity, and said his office would not tolerate an officer using the threat of federal law enforcement for a personal vendetta.

FBI Assistant Director in Charge James Barnacle, quoted by QNS, said Islam’s guilty plea showed that impersonating a federal officer is a serious crime that erodes public trust.
What happened to Islam’s NYPD job
QNS reported that Islam resigned from the NYPD on September 25, 2026, as required by his plea, and that he cannot apply for another position with the NYPD or any law-enforcement agency. The New York Daily News reported that he joined the department in 2018 and became a sergeant in 2023. It also said the NYPD referred the matter to federal prosecutors after discovering the alleged misconduct.

Has Islam been sentenced?
No. As of October 3, 2026, sentencing was pending and had been scheduled for March 24, 2027. The charge carries a reported maximum prison term of three years. The New York Daily News separately reported a sentencing-guideline estimate of zero to six months. Those figures describe different measures: the statutory maximum is the legal ceiling reported for the offense, while the guideline estimate is not a court-imposed sentence. Neither establishes what sentence Islam will receive.
