Max Hodak was describing a possible future display, not announcing a VR implant that exists today. In a 2022 interview, the former Neuralink cofounder said Science Corporation saw a path to an “ultimate AR/VR display technology without meaningful surgery.” He also said that consumer version would use different technology from Science Eye, the investigational retinal device then under development.
What did Max Hodak actually claim?
Hodak, founder and CEO of Science Corporation, was discussing a long-term possibility. His quoted statement was: “We think we see a way to create what ends up as the ultimate AR/VR display technology without meaningful surgery.” The words “we think” and “ends up” matter: they describe a projected direction, not a working product or a demonstrated VR experience.
In the same 2022 interview, Hodak said the future mass-market system would use “different underlying technology, not the microLED film.” Science’s immediate priority, he said, was getting its clinical product to patients. The headline’s “ultimate VR tech” is therefore shorthand for a possible successor technology, not a description of the medical device itself.

How was Science Eye supposed to work?
Science Eye was an early concept for a retinal prosthesis. Its proposed approach paired gene therapy, intended to make targeted retinal or optic-nerve cells sensitive to light, with a flexible microLED display positioned over the retina. The aim was to stimulate cells in people who had lost photoreceptors.

A display attached inside the eye could, in principle, stay aligned with eye movement in a way that an image projected from glasses might not. That is an engineering rationale for the concept, not evidence that Science Eye can produce an immersive or full-sensory VR environment. Hodak’s interview explicitly separated the proposed consumer technology from the microLED-film concept.
Is this a Neuralink implant?
No. Hodak co-founded Neuralink, later left, and founded Science Corporation. The implant concepts in this story belong to Science, not Neuralink. The Neuralink connection explains why the story is framed around a Neuralink cofounder; it does not mean Neuralink made, tested, or announced the device.

How does Science Eye differ from the clinical PRIMA system?
Science’s PRIMA system is a related but distinct retinal prosthesis. Its clinical approach is photovoltaic: a subretinal implant works with camera and infrared-projector glasses to stimulate surviving retinal cells. It is not the gene-therapy-plus-flexible-microLED concept described for Science Eye, and its purpose is limited central-vision restoration rather than VR.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors| Comparison | Science Eye concept | PRIMA system |
|---|---|---|
| Implant approach | Proposed flexible microLED display over the retina, paired with gene therapy to make targeted cells light-sensitive; described in Hodak’s 2022 interview. | Subretinal photovoltaic implant; described in the 2025 New England Journal of Medicine study. |
| External equipment | The concept was described as an implant/display approach; a specific glasses or processor configuration was not stated in the interview. | Uses camera and infrared-projector glasses, according to Science’s description of PRIMA. |
| Intended use | An early medical concept for stimulating cells after photoreceptor loss. The interview’s possible consumer successor was described as a separate future technology. | Limited central-vision restoration for geographic atrophy caused by age-related macular degeneration, according to the 2025 study. |
| Evidence and status | No human-trial, regulatory-clearance, or commercial-launch evidence for the proposed AR/VR successor is cited. | Human clinical results were published in the New England Journal of Medicine on October 20, 2025; these are vision-restoration results, not VR results. |
What have human studies shown?
The relevant published clinical evidence is for PRIMA, not for the proposed AR/VR successor. The New England Journal of Medicine study, published October 20, 2025, involved 38 implanted participants. At 12 months, 32 participants were assessed; 26 of those 32 had clinically meaningful visual-acuity improvement. The study also reported 26 serious adverse events in 19 participants.

Those findings concern people with geographic atrophy from age-related macular degeneration and the restoration of limited central vision. They do not establish immersive VR capability, validate Science Eye’s microLED-and-gene-therapy concept, or show that Hodak’s future consumer-display projection has entered human testing.
TIME’s 2026 profile of the technology reported a 10-letter eye-chart improvement and corrected an earlier 20-letter version. For the clinical study’s participant counts, 12-month outcome, and serious adverse events, the New England Journal of Medicine paper is the relevant source.

Can you buy the implant or use it for VR now?
No. Science says its investigational devices are not available for purchase. The sources cited here do not show that the proposed AR/VR successor has entered human trials, received regulatory clearance, or launched commercially, and they state no consumer price. PRIMA’s published clinical results do not change that: it is a medical vision-restoration system, not a consumer VR product.

For now, “ultimate AR/VR display” should be read as Hodak’s ambition for a possible later technology. It is not a capability demonstrated by Science Eye or PRIMA.
