Federal prosecutors allege that Mercedes Henry, a former Ameris Bank universal banker in the Atlanta area, helped move approximately $931,500 from six customers’ accounts to Coinbase accounts controlled by alleged co-conspirators in 2021. Henry was indicted in September 2026 on bank fraud, access device fraud, and bribery charges. The indictment is not a finding of guilt; she is presumed innocent unless prosecutors prove the charges beyond a reasonable doubt.
What prosecutors allege happened
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Georgia, Henry, 35, of Stone Mountain, worked as a universal banker at Ameris Bank locations in the Atlanta area in 2021. Prosecutors allege that, on at least six occasions between September and November of that year, she used account numbers and identifying information belonging to six Ameris customers to link their accounts to Coinbase accounts controlled by alleged co-conspirators.
The government says approximately $931,500 was transferred from the customers’ Ameris accounts to those Coinbase accounts. Prosecutors further allege Henry received more than $1,000 for participating. These are allegations in the indictment, not court-established findings of losses or payments.
What charges Henry faces
A federal grand jury returned an indictment on September 22, 2026. Henry appeared in federal court on September 25 after her arrest. The charges are bank fraud, access device fraud, and bribery, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

The FBI investigated the case, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Cathelynn Tio is prosecuting it. The announcement does not report a plea, trial date, conviction, or case outcome. Coinbase is described as the platform where accounts controlled by alleged co-conspirators received transfers; the announcement does not say Coinbase was charged or knowingly participated.

What is—and is not—established
The distinction between the alleged transfer total and Henry’s alleged payment matters: prosecutors cite approximately $931,500 as the amount transferred from customer accounts, while alleging that Henry received more than $1,000. Neither figure is an adjudicated finding in the announcement.

The DOJ cautions that “the indictment only contains charges.” Henry is presumed innocent, and the government must prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt at trial. The public announcement does not establish whether customers were reimbursed, whether any funds were recovered, or how the case will be resolved.
