Former Knoxville Police Chief Phil Keith says the images from Colleen Slemmer’s 1995 murder remain vivid decades later. In a recent interview, he said the case stayed with him and wished investigators had been offered counseling at the time. His recollection has drawn renewed attention after Christa Pike, convicted in Slemmer’s killing, survived a lethal-injection attempt on September 30, 2026.

What Phil Keith remembers about Slemmer’s murder

“I’ll remember this case to the day I die,” Keith told Fox News Digital Thursday. He said the crime-scene images remain as vivid as when he first saw them: “All I have to do is shut my eyes, and I can see everything.”

Keith said the Knoxville Police Department did not have therapy or counseling services for investigators at the time. “I wish we had, because these images will never be erased,” he said. His account is a personal recollection, not a finding about the mental health of every investigator who worked the case.

Who Colleen Slemmer was

Slemmer was 19 and a student at the Knoxville Job Corps Center when she was murdered in January 1995. Christa Pike, then 18, and fellow student Tadaryl Shipp were convicted in the killing. Their connection to Slemmer through the Job Corps Center is the essential context for Keith’s recollection; the present attention does not change the focus of the case from Slemmer and the loss of her life.

Why the case is back in the news

Pike was scheduled to be executed in Tennessee on September 30, 2026. After two doses of lethal-injection drugs, she survived and was hospitalized. In a Friday statement cited by the October 3 report, her attorneys said Pike remained critically ill, unconscious, intubated, and receiving ventilator assistance. That is a time-specific account from her attorneys, not a complete official medical explanation or a later condition update.

Associated Press reporting said Governor Bill Lee ordered a comprehensive third-party review of the execution and said Tennessee’s remaining scheduled execution would not take place in 2026. Lee said carrying out a lawful sentence must be done legally, constitutionally, and effectively. The review’s ultimate outcome and Pike’s eventual legal status are not established here.
