Former BioWare lead Mark Darrah has attributed some of the development problems behind Dragon Age: The Veilguard to EA’s expectation that BioWare release a game each year. That is Darrah’s assessment as reported by GamesRadar+, not proof that annualization alone caused the game’s commercial performance.

What Mark Darrah said about BioWare’s release cadence

GamesRadar+ reports that EA wanted BioWare to publish something every year, a demanding schedule for a studio making large role-playing games. Darrah’s reported sequence began in 2013 and included Dragon Age: Inquisition, Mass Effect: Andromeda, Anthem, and Dragon Age 4. Delays, the outlet says, created a domino effect, with The Veilguard arriving in late 2024.

The outlet also reports that projects’ target dates shifted repeatedly by small increments. In Darrah’s account, that kept the team close to what it perceived as the release date and left limited room to rethink the project.

Why senior leadership mattered

Darrah said that while he was assigned to Anthem, from 2017 to 2019, The Veilguard project lacked its most senior leadership. GamesRadar+ printed his remark: “The project ran without its most senior leadership when I was on Anthem, from 2017 until 2019,” he explains.

  • BECOME THE LEADER OTHERS BELIEVE IN - Select from different races and combat classes, customize your appearance, choose your character’s backstory and begin your journey as Rook, Dragon Age’s newest hero. The choice is yours. Brace yourself, there are tough decisions to be made, allies to inspire, and a fight that needs every sword, staff and bow you can muster.
  • Dramatic Single-Player Campaign - When corrupt Elven Gods threaten Thedas, lead the charge to save it. Rook isn’t afraid of a fight, no matter the odds. No matter the cost.
  • Vibrant And Diverse Environments - Enter a vivid fantasy world and experience imaginative new locations as well as some you’ve heard of, but never seen. Larger Than Life Foes - Battle darkspawn, demons from beyond the Veil, dragons that rule the skies, and unique enemies as you advance your quest and fight for Thedas’s future

That detail adds a leadership dimension to the reported schedule pressure: the story is not only about how often EA wanted BioWare to release games, but also about who was available to guide The Veilguard during part of its development.

What the report does—and does not—establish about failure

GamesRadar+ characterizes the game’s reception as muted and refers to commercial failure, but its article text gives no named, attributable sales figure. It also does not establish that annual release expectations were the sole cause of the game’s commercial underperformance. The claim is best understood as Darrah’s explanation of development difficulties, not a definitive finding by EA or BioWare.
