Former AWS developer Justin Garrison alleged that Amazon workplace changes—including reassignment options with less favorable terms and a return-to-office requirement—could push employees to resign after their teams were eliminated. Amazon disputed his account. The available reporting documents a dispute over Garrison’s experience and the purpose of Amazon’s policy; it does not establish a company-wide covert plan to reduce headcount through resignations.
What did the former AWS developer allege?
In a personal blog post, Justin Garrison said that on September 1, 2023, he was told his team and an adjacent team were being eliminated. He said he and his colleagues were encouraged to remain at Amazon by finding other internal roles, but that the options he considered came with trade-offs such as lower pay, lower titles, or a return-to-office requirement. Garrison’s account is first-person testimony, not an independently verified account of Amazon’s broader workforce practices.
Garrison also wrote that he asked about severance and was told it would be available after other options had been exhausted. He described delays in getting an answer, and a January 10 update to his post said he had quit Amazon. These details describe his reported experience; they do not by themselves demonstrate that Amazon intended to make employees resign rather than pursue other options.

How did Amazon respond?
In a statement quoted by ITPro, an Amazon spokesperson rejected Garrison’s anecdotes as inaccurate and misleading, saying the company had been clear about what drove its return-to-office decision. That is Amazon’s response to the allegations, not an independent finding about what happened in Garrison’s case.

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy’s employee message set out the company’s stated rationale for an office policy announced in 2023: collaboration, culture, learning, and customer service. Jassy said employees were expected to work in the office together at least three days a week, with the change planned to take effect May 1. The announcement explains the company’s stated reasons; it does not show whether the policy caused employees to resign or resolve the dispute over Garrison’s account. Read Jassy’s announcement.

Is Amazon “quietly firing” employees?
“Quiet firing” or “silent sacking” describes an alleged strategy of making work or continued employment less attractive so that employees leave voluntarily. In this case, the phrase captures Garrison’s interpretation of his experience; the sources do not verify it as Amazon’s policy. The documented evidence supports a narrower conclusion: Garrison described circumstances he viewed as pressure to leave, Amazon disputed his anecdotes, and an expert quoted by ITPro considered poor judgment a more likely explanation than a deliberate silent-sacking exercise in this case.
