If you forgot the Steam Deck’s sudo password, Steam’s documented instructions do not provide a self-service way to recover a password that was already set and forgotten. The passwd command in Steam’s instructions is for setting a password from a desktop session—not for resetting a forgotten one. Before choosing a recovery option that could erase data, check what each option does and make sure you are using the SteamOS password, not your Steam login password.

First, confirm which password you forgot

The Steam Deck’s desktop account password is separate from the password for your Steam account. Steam says the desktop account ships without a password, but can gain root access after one is assigned. Steam’s SteamOS Accounts page describes the desktop account; its Desktop FAQ says to open a terminal and run passwd to set a secure password for sudo use.

That command is setup guidance, not a documented forgotten-password recovery command. If you can still access the desktop session and want to assign a password, follow Steam’s instructions. If the password was set previously and is now forgotten, the official material reviewed does not document a self-service way to retrieve or reset it without recovery measures.

Check the data consequences before using SteamOS recovery

Steam documents several recovery choices, but they are not interchangeable. Choose based on whether your goal is to recover the operating system or clear local data, and whether preserving user content is essential. Steam’s recovery instructions distinguish these outcomes:

#1 Best Overall
Valve Steam Deck OLED 1TB Handheld Gaming Console
  • 1TB NVMe SSD
  • 1280 x 800 HDR OLED display with premium anti-glare etched glass, 7.4" Diagonal display size up to 90Hz refresh rate
  • Wi-Fi 6E
  • 50Whr battery; 3-12 hours of gameplay (content-dependent)
  • Carrying case with removable liner
Recovery option Purpose and data impact
Rollback Returns to a previous SteamOS version while retaining user data.
Repair SteamOS Attempts to preserve games and personal content while repairing SteamOS.
Factory Reset Clears local user data.
Erase User Data Clears local user data.
Re-image Device Wipes user information and installed content.

Retaining data during a rollback or attempting to preserve content with Repair SteamOS does not mean that either option resets a forgotten sudo password. Steam’s documentation describes them as operating-system recovery choices, not password-recovery procedures.

If you choose recovery media, prepare it carefully

Steam’s recovery-media instructions require a USB key with at least 8 GB of capacity. The recovery image-writing process formats the USB drive, so use a drive whose contents you can erase. You can connect it to the Deck’s free USB port or use a hub if needed. Steam’s recovery guide provides the recovery-media procedure and explains the available actions in the recovery environment.

  3. Connect the USB key to the Deck’s free USB port, or through a hub if direct connection is not practical.
  4. In the recovery environment, read the description of each option and select only after considering its data impact.

Choose the least destructive route that fits your situation

  • If your priority is keeping local user data, note that Steam says rollback retains it; this is an OS rollback, not a documented sudo-password reset.
  • If you want to repair SteamOS while trying to keep games and personal content, Repair SteamOS is described as attempting to preserve them; preservation is not guaranteed.
  • If you choose Factory Reset or Erase User Data, expect local user data to be cleared.
  • If you choose Re-image Device, expect user information and installed content to be wiped.

Steam’s official pages reviewed do not state publication dates, so check the current recovery instructions before proceeding in case the supported procedure or options have changed.
