If you’re looking for a video game adaptation to watch, start with Arcane, The Last of Us, Fallout, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, or Werewolves Within. The first four are acclaimed series; the fifth is a film pick to give this list a mix of formats. They take different routes from game to screen: some adapt a specific story, while others create new stories in a game’s world. You don’t need to play the games first.
Five adaptations, five different ways to bring games to the screen
There is no single standard for the “best” adaptation. A faithful retelling can work for its character drama, while a new story can capture a game’s setting and tone without copying its missions. The Rotten Tomatoes scores below are snapshots from its guide published December 18, 2025; critic and audience percentages measure different groups and can change over time.
| Title | Format and approach | Rotten Tomatoes snapshot (Dec. 18, 2025) |
|---|---|---|
| Arcane | Animated series expanding the League of Legends world | Season 2: 100% Tomatometer; 81% Popcornmeter |
| The Last of Us | Live-action drama; Season 1 adapts the first game | Season 1: 96% Tomatometer; 86% Popcornmeter |
| Fallout | Live-action post-apocalyptic story extending the games’ world | Season 1: 93% Tomatometer; 95% Popcornmeter. Season 2: 96% on both measures |
| Cyberpunk: Edgerunners | 10-episode anime; standalone story in the Cyberpunk universe | Season 1: 100% Tomatometer; 95% Popcornmeter |
| Werewolves Within | Live-action comedy-horror film based on the Ubisoft game | Not stated in the cited Rotten Tomatoes guide |
1. Arcane: an animated drama that makes the game world its own
Arcane is an animated series set in the world of League of Legends. Rather than follow the structure of a match or reproduce game missions, it uses the setting as the backdrop for a character-driven story. That makes it a strong choice for viewers who like richly imagined worlds but aren’t looking for a direct retelling of gameplay.
Rotten Tomatoes’ December 18, 2025 guide lists Season 2 at 100% on the Tomatometer and 81% on the Popcornmeter. Its critic consensus describes the final season as “a supremely satisfying capper to an epic saga.” Those percentages capture the site’s ratings on that date, not a permanent or universal verdict.
#1 Best Overall
- The Help (Three-Disc Combo: Blu-ray/DVD + Digital Copy)
2. The Last of Us: a close adaptation that works for newcomers
The Last of Us turns the game’s post-outbreak journey into live-action character drama. Sony says Season 1 adapted the entire first game: Joel must escort Ellie through a world devastated by infection. The series is therefore the closest fit here if you want to see a game’s main story translated to television rather than a separate adventure in its universe.
You don’t have to play first. Neil Druckmann, identified by Sony as Naughty Dog Studio Head and an executive producer, co-creator, and writer of HBO’s series, said: “You don’t need to play the game to enjoy the show. That was always important. But if you do, and you watch the show, it will fill in certain gaps for the game.” Season 2 begins five years after Season 1, according to Sony Pictures.

Rotten Tomatoes’ December 18, 2025 guide gives Season 1 a 96% Tomatometer score and an 86% Popcornmeter score. If the show makes you curious about its source, playing the game is an optional way to experience the story in its original medium.
3. Fallout: a new story with room for longtime fans and newcomers
Fallout uses the franchise’s post-apocalyptic setting and tone for a television story rather than simply reenacting a game plot. Rotten Tomatoes describes the first season as an extension of the games that works for newcomers as well as longtime fans, which makes it an easy entry point if you want the world’s dark humor and wasteland setting without committing to a role-playing game.

In Rotten Tomatoes’ December 18, 2025 guide, Season 1 scores 93% on the Tomatometer and 95% on the Popcornmeter. The same guide lists Season 2 at 96% on both measures. Each figure is a dated snapshot, and the two measures reflect critics and audiences separately.
4. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners: a compact, standalone anime
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is a 10-episode anime set in the larger Cyberpunk universe created by Mike Pondsmith. Netflix describes the series as based on Cyberpunk 2077; CD PROJEKT RED calls it a standalone story about a street kid trying to survive in a future city shaped by technology and body modification. The production was made in collaboration with Japanese studio TRIGGER.

- In THE IMITATION GAME, Benedict Cumberbatch stars as Alan Turing, the genius British mathematician, logician, cryptologist and computer scientist who led the charge to crack the German Enigma Code that helped the Allies win WWII. Turing went on to assist with the development of computers at the University of Manchester after the war, but was prosecuted by the UK government in 1952 for homosexual a
Its independence from the game’s plot makes it a sensible choice if you want the setting and its high-tech, high-risk atmosphere without needing to know the game’s characters or events. Rotten Tomatoes’ December 18, 2025 guide lists Season 1 at 100% on the Tomatometer and 95% on the Popcornmeter. CD PROJEKT RED’s official site has announced Edgerunners 2 for Fall 2026, exclusively on Netflix; that is a future release announcement, not confirmation that it is available to watch now.
5. Werewolves Within: a lighter film pick
To include a film as well as television, consider Werewolves Within, a live-action comedy-horror film based on Ubisoft’s social-deduction game. Its premise lends itself to a self-contained ensemble mystery rather than a recreation of a game campaign. It is the outlier here: a smaller-scale, comic change of pace if four serialized worlds feel like too much of a commitment.

How to choose your first watch
- For animation and world-building: choose Arcane or Cyberpunk: Edgerunners.
- For a game story closely adapted to live action: start with Season 1 of The Last of Us.
- For a new story rooted in a familiar game universe: try Fallout.
- For a one-film change of pace: pick Werewolves Within.
These are recommendations across formats, not a claim that one adaptation is objectively superior to every other game-to-screen project. The right one depends on whether you want a direct adaptation, a new story in an established world, animation, or a film you can finish in one sitting.
