Star Wars games are becoming one of the franchise’s most flexible storytelling formats, but the evidence does not show that they have replaced—or overtaken—films. The more defensible case for games is that they can put players inside the story, support genres that do not fit a theatrical feature, and explore corners of the galaxy between movie releases. Lucasfilm itself says its games help extend the saga’s narrative, while its film slate continues to move forward.

What it means for Star Wars’ future to belong to games

“Belongs to” is best understood as a statement about creative opportunity, not a claim that games now dominate Star Wars by revenue, audience, or corporate investment. The available sources do not establish a like-for-like performance comparison between the franchise’s games and films.

Lucasfilm Games describes its mission as creating “interactive and immersive experiences that help extend the narrative of the Star Wars galaxy for fans around the world.” That is the company’s stated purpose, rather than independent evidence of audience demand. Its work spans console, PC, mobile, and AR/VR, giving the franchise formats beyond theatrical storytelling.

Films and games offer different kinds of storytelling. A film delivers a fixed, authored experience to everyone watching; a game can make the player’s decisions, tactics, or actions part of the experience. The distinction does not make one format inherently better. It gives Star Wars more than one way to tell a story.

Why games suit a galaxy built for many kinds of stories

Player agency changes the point of view

In a game, the audience can take an active role rather than only observe events. That can mean choosing how to approach a mission, managing a team, or shaping a character’s journey. Casey Hudson, director of Fate of the Old Republic, described its intended experience as “emotionally powerful, cinematic adventures driven by player agency, narrative depth, and immersive world-building.” This is a creative goal for that project, not a measured result.

Douglas Reilly, Lucasfilm Games vice president and general manager, has said there are “quite literally, infinite stories to tell” in the galaxy’s distant past. That is an argument for the setting’s narrative room, not a promise that every era or story will become a game.

Games can shift genre without changing the universe

Lucasfilm’s portfolio shows how varied Star Wars games can be: Jedi: Survivor is described as a third-person, narrative-driven single-player action-adventure; Zero Company is a turn-based tactics game; Galactic Racer is a racing game; Eclipse is a branching action-adventure; and Fate of the Old Republic is a narrative-driven action RPG. These examples demonstrate range, not that every project is already available or that games outperform films.

That variety lets creators approach the same galaxy through very different play styles: a personal adventure, a squad’s tactical decisions, high-speed racing, or role-playing. A film remains a theatrical feature; the game format can support a broader mix of interactive experiences.

What the announced projects show

Star Wars: Zero Company

Star Wars: Zero Company was announced as a single-player tactics game set in the twilight of the Clone Wars, developed by Bit Reactor with Respawn Entertainment and Lucasfilm Games. The announcement named PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S and gave a 2026 release window. That is the announcement-era window, not confirmation of the game’s current release date or availability. See the official announcement for the project’s description.

Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic

Fate of the Old Republic is a separately announced single-player action RPG from Arcanaut Studios, made in collaboration with Lucasfilm Games and directed by Casey Hudson. Lucasfilm says it is not a direct sequel or continuation of Knights of the Old Republic, so it should not be described as KOTOR 3. The official announcement and interview explain the project and its intended storytelling approach.

The rest of the games slate

Lucasfilm’s games portfolio also lists projects such as Galactic Racer and Eclipse, alongside released titles including Jedi: Survivor. Project descriptions and release status can change; a listing or announcement is not, on its own, proof that a game is available to play.

Movies are still part of the franchise’s future

The evidence points to coexistence, not replacement. Lucasfilm’s productions page lists The Mandalorian and Grogu among its 2026 productions. The Associated Press reported that Star Wars: Starfighter was announced for a May 2027 theatrical release. Those dates reflect the cited listings and reporting; film schedules can change.

Games may have a more flexible release and genre pipeline, but that does not establish that films are finished, less important, or commercially behind. The available sources describe projects and creative aims; they do not supply comparable Star Wars-specific figures for game and film revenue, audiences, or cultural reach.

How to judge the claim fairly

  • For storytelling: games add player participation and agency; films provide a fixed, authored viewing experience.
  • For format: the game projects span tactics, racing, action-adventure, branching adventure, and role-playing, while films remain theatrical features.
  • For the release pipeline: announced windows and production listings are snapshots, not guarantees of current timing or availability.
  • For commercial success: the cited material does not establish a direct, comparable Star Wars game-versus-film performance result.

On those terms, the strongest version of the headline is that games are an increasingly important place for Star Wars stories—not that movies have lost their place. They give the franchise room to experiment with player choice and genres while theatrical projects continue.
