NVIDIA’s GTC 2022 demo showed that a GeForce RTX 3090 could render demanding, fully path-traced scenes interactively—but not effortlessly or at a consistently high gaming frame rate. HotHardware reported that the most complex scenes hovered around 30 FPS. The demonstration was a research renderer supported by sampling and other performance techniques, not proof that every game could switch to cinematic path tracing without trade-offs.

What real-time path tracing means

Path tracing is a way to simulate how light travels through a scene. Rather than calculate only a few selected lighting effects, it traces many probabilistic paths from the camera and estimates how light arrives at each visible surface. Those paths can account for direct light, indirect bounce light, reflections, and soft shadows within one lighting method.

That unified approach can produce convincing results in complicated lighting, but it is computationally expensive. A renderer must evaluate many light paths, and the limited number it can afford in each frame can leave visible noise. Real-time systems therefore combine path tracing with methods such as light-sampling caches, denoising, and temporal or neural reconstruction.

How it differs from rasterization and hybrid ray tracing

Approach How it produces the image Lighting and image trade-offs Performance and compatibility
Rasterization Projects visible geometry onto the screen, then uses lighting techniques and approximations to shade it. Efficient and mature, but lighting effects often need separate approximations or baked data. Widely used in games and compatible with established engine workflows and assets.
Hybrid ray tracing Uses rasterization for much of the image and adds ray tracing for selected effects, such as reflections or shadows. Can improve specific effects without tracing all light transport; the result depends on which effects are ray traced and how they are combined. Limits ray-tracing work compared with tracing the full lighting solution, while retaining a rasterized base.
Path tracing Uses traced light paths to estimate the scene’s lighting more comprehensively in a unified framework. Can naturally combine direct and indirect illumination, reflections, and soft shadows, but limited samples create noise and reconstruction can affect fidelity. More demanding than rasterization or selective ray tracing. A real-time implementation relies on optimization and may not match a slower, higher-fidelity path-tracing mode.

These are broad distinctions, not guarantees about every renderer. Actual image quality and speed depend on implementation, scene, settings, and hardware.

What NVIDIA demonstrated at GTC 2022

NVIDIA’s research renderer, described in HotHardware’s April 2, 2022 report, used RTXGI- and RTXDI-style techniques to render scenes with standard 3D models, animated meshes, physics, and post-processing. The report said the demonstration handled scenes with up to 3 billion triangles and up to 30 bounces per ray. Those are maximums reported for the research demonstration—not typical game settings or a promise that every scene could use them at a high frame rate.

On a GeForce RTX 3090, the most complex examples were around 30 FPS, according to HotHardware. That is an interactive result, but the report does not establish a universal gaming benchmark: frame rate changes with scene complexity, resolution, lighting, bounce limits, denoising, and GPU. The available report also does not provide a single resolution or settings profile that would make the figure comparable to a standardized game test.

The demo was more than a simple voxel scene, but it also exposed the compromises. The heaviest scenes remained slow by high-refresh-rate gaming standards; difficult effects could look noisy, and volumetrics showed visible stippling. The result demonstrated a promising rendering direction, not a brute-force replacement for the rendering pipeline in every game.

Why path-traced images can look noisy

A renderer estimates lighting from a finite number of sampled paths. When there are too few samples to represent the possible paths smoothly, neighboring pixels can receive noticeably different estimates, appearing as grain or flicker. Indirect light, complex materials, and volumetric effects can be especially challenging.

More samples can reduce noise but require more computation. Real-time renderers try to get a clean image without waiting for those samples by reusing lighting information, denoising the result, and reconstructing detail across frames. These methods make interactive rendering practical, but they can introduce softness, artifacts, or other differences from a fully converged image.

What the modern real-time pipeline adds

NVIDIA’s 2023 developer guidance described an RTX Path Tracing SDK that combines path tracing with tools including DLSS 3, RTX Direct Illumination (RTXDI), NVIDIA Real-Time Denoisers, Opacity Micro-Maps, and Shader Execution Reordering. These components address different costs in the pipeline: sampling and lighting, noise reduction, handling geometry or transparency, and organizing ray work. They are practical supports for real-time rendering, not evidence that path tracing has become computationally free.

NVIDIA’s open-source RTXPT sample describes a pure path tracer that does not rely on rasterization. Its main configuration evaluates light transport in one ray-tracing pass, uses light-sampling caches to support real-time performance, and generates guide buffers for DLSS Ray Reconstruction denoising. A sample renderer demonstrates an approach developers can study; it does not establish that every game engine or scene will get the same performance.

What changed after the 2022 demo

Developer tools and remastered games

NVIDIA’s 2023 developer guidance said the RTX Path Tracing SDK was available to developers, extending parts of the research direction into a development toolkit. In March 2025, NVIDIA announced that RTX Remix had officially exited beta with DLSS 4 Multi Frame Generation, neural-rendering features, and AI tools. The announcement also offered a free Half-Life 2 RTX demo. NVIDIA reported that more than 30,000 modders had experimented with hundreds of classic titles and that more than 1 million gamers had played RTX Remix mods. Those are NVIDIA’s reported figures, not independent measurements of path-tracing adoption across games.

More complex geometry and neural rendering

In a 2025 newsroom announcement, NVIDIA claimed RTX Mega Geometry could support up to 100 times more triangles than its stated standard baseline. The same announcement showed an updated Zorah demo using RTX Mega Geometry, RTX Hair, ReSTIR Path Tracing, and ReSTIR Direct Illumination. The triangle comparison is NVIDIA’s claim relative to that baseline; it should not be confused with the 2022 demo’s separate maximum of 3 billion triangles.

Real-time versus higher-fidelity path tracing in Omniverse

NVIDIA’s current Omniverse documentation, accessed October 1, 2026, describes RTX Real-Time 2.0 as a physically based path-tracing mode using DLSS neural rendering. It also distinguishes that mode from RTX Interactive (Path Tracing), which can achieve higher fidelity with performance trade-offs. NVIDIA notes that some effects in Real-Time 2.0 can diverge from the more accurate result to preserve real-time performance, and says Ada Lovelace and later GPUs perform best. That guidance applies to the documented Omniverse modes; it is not a universal minimum-GPU requirement for every path-traced game or application.

Do you need an RTX 40- or 50-series card?

The 2022 demonstration itself ran on an RTX 3090, so it does not show that an RTX 40- or 50-series card is required for all real-time path tracing. Conversely, the demo is not evidence that a 3090 will deliver a particular frame rate in a different game or application. Hardware needs depend on the renderer and its settings. For NVIDIA’s documented Omniverse RTX Real-Time 2.0 mode, Ada Lovelace and later GPUs are identified as performing best, but the documentation does not state a universal minimum for path tracing as a whole.
