Maharashtra’s forest department says it will check elephant Madhuri at Nandani Math in Kolhapur every two weeks. An assistant conservator is expected to visit and submit a health report, but Kolhapur deputy conservator of forests Dhairyasheel Patil said he had not yet received a report, according to Hindustan Times on October 3, 2026. The announcement describes a monitoring plan, not confirmation that checks or reports have already taken place.
What the monitoring plan includes
The announced schedule is a forest-department visit every fortnight—every two weeks—with an assistant conservator expected to submit a health report. Patil’s comment that he was “yet to receive the report” makes clear that the first report was not in hand when Hindustan Times published its account on October 3. The story does not establish whether the first visit had occurred.
The plan follows Madhuri’s return to Nandani Math in Kolhapur on September 11–12, as reported by Hindustan Times. Madhuri is also referred to as Mahadevi in some coverage.

Officials representing four maths—three in Kolhapur and one in Sangli—agreed to bring their captive female elephants together once every two months for socialisation. Patil said the initiative would begin in the month after the October 3 report. This was a future plan at the time of reporting, not evidence that a gathering had taken place.

Why Madhuri returned to Kolhapur
Vantara, the Jamnagar facility where Madhuri had been staying, said she arrived there on July 30, 2025, under directions of the High-Powered Committee (HPC) that were upheld by the Bombay High Court and Supreme Court. In a statement dated September 14, 2026, Vantara said the committee permitted her return to Kolhapur on September 9 after hearing parties, considering reports and inspecting Nandani. The committee’s order text is not available in the sources reviewed, so this account of the decision is attributable to Vantara rather than a direct reading of the order.
The Times of India reported that Vantara described the return conditions as requiring round-the-clock care, a medical examination every fortnight, and no use of Madhuri in processions or for any other purpose. These are conditions as reported from Vantara’s account, not independently verified wording from the HPC order.

What PETA says about Madhuri’s welfare
Hindustan Times reported that PETA India approached the Supreme Court seeking rehabilitation for Madhuri at Vantara. The sources reviewed do not establish a decision on that application.
PETA’s concerns, as reported by Hindustan Times, include exercise and socialisation, human interference, water access and contamination, and specialised veterinary care. The newspaper also reported PETA’s allegations that Madhuri’s return took place amid fireworks, loud music, vehicle horns and crowds, and that she was tethered alone. These are PETA’s claims, including its account of an HPC sub-committee report; the underlying report and independent verification were not available in the sources reviewed.

PETA had opposed a return to Nandani in a June 24, 2026 statement, before the committee’s September decision. That earlier advocacy position is not evidence of what the committee later decided.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What remains unconfirmed
The reporting establishes the department’s stated monitoring schedule and the separate socialisation plan, but it does not independently establish Madhuri’s current physical condition. It also does not confirm that forest-department reports have been produced, that the planned gatherings have begun, or how the Supreme Court will respond to PETA’s application. The current HPC order and the sub-committee report are not available in the cited coverage, limiting what can be concluded about the exact binding conditions or inspection findings.
