The right tires for a Ford Ranger depend first on its model year, trim, market, and the size and ratings on its tire-information label. Match that fitment before comparing wet-road traction, winter suitability, comfort, tread life, or off-road ability. The available sources do not establish one tire as best for every Ranger or provide an independent Ranger-specific head-to-head test.
Start with your Ranger’s tire label, not a generic size chart
Ford’s 2026 Ranger Owner’s Manual says: “Only use replacement tires and wheels that are the same size, load index, speed rating, and type as those originally provided for your vehicle.” Check the tire-information label on your specific vehicle and its owner’s manual before shopping; do not assume another Ranger’s fitment applies to yours. Ford’s owner-manual page provides manuals, but your vehicle’s own label is the key fitment reference.
The 2026 manual lists multiple combinations, including 255/70R16 111T, 255/70R17 112T, 255/65R18 111T or 111H, 255/55R20 110V, and LT265/70R17 112/109T. These are examples from that model-year manual, not a complete fitment chart for all Rangers. Ford warns that an unapproved tire or wheel “could affect the safety and performance of your vehicle,” increasing the risk of loss of control, rollover, injury, or death.

Mostly paved daily driving
Prioritize the exact approved fitment, wet-road behavior, comfort and noise, and the terms of any treadwear warranty. Michelin describes its Defender LTX M/S 2 as an all-season, on-road tire for pickups, SUVs, crossovers, and vans, and advertises wet and dry traction, comfort, and long tread life. Those are manufacturer claims, not proof that it outperforms competing tires on a Ranger. See Michelin’s product description.

Frequent dirt roads or mixed surfaces
Consider whether an all-terrain tire fits your actual use, then check the specific tire’s approved size and ratings, road behavior, and any winter claims. NHTSA says, “All-terrain tires are mainly used on four-wheel drive vehicles.” That is general guidance, not a rule that every four-wheel-drive Ranger needs all-terrain tires or that the category is automatically better on pavement. NHTSA’s TireWise guidance explains tire safety ratings and selection.
Snow, ice, and cold-weather driving
Base a winter choice on your local conditions and tire-specific winter markings and performance evidence. The sources available here do not compare Ranger-compatible tires in severe snow, ice, or regional winter tests, so they cannot support a model ranking for those conditions.

Understand what the ratings can—and cannot—tell you
NHTSA explains that the Uniform Tire Quality Grading (UTQG) traction grade—AA, A, B, or C—indicates wet-pavement stopping performance. It does not rank every aspect of a tire’s performance, and it is not a measure of off-road grip. UTQG also provides treadwear and heat-resistance comparisons where applicable. Use these ratings as part of a decision, not as a substitute for fitment or evidence relevant to your driving.

A listed Ranger fitment is an example, not a universal recommendation
Michelin’s U.S. selector lists Defender LTX M/S 2 in 255/65R17 XL 114T for a particular 2022 Ford Ranger Lariat 4×2 configuration. View that selector result. It is a model-specific listing, not a claim that this tire fits every 2022 Ranger or is the best option for all Rangers. Check the ratings against your own label and verify fitment for your exact vehicle before purchase.

A practical way to narrow your options
- Record your vehicle details. Note model year, trim, market, drivetrain, and the tire size and ratings printed on the vehicle label.
- Rule out mismatched tires. Keep only options that meet Ford’s size, load-index, speed-rating, and type requirements for your vehicle.
- Describe your use. Estimate your mix of highway, city, wet-weather, winter, dirt-road, and rough-surface driving, along with regular loads or towing.
- Compare relevant evidence. Review wet performance, winter suitability, comfort, and warranty terms for the exact tire and size; distinguish manufacturer descriptions from comparative test results.
- Confirm before buying. Recheck fitment and current availability with the vehicle selector or installer, then follow the vehicle’s specified tire pressure.
