Food scrap pickup is available in some U.S. communities, but there is no single nationwide network: eligibility, accepted scraps, schedules, equipment, and prices depend on your address and provider. Coffee grounds and eggshells are commonly accepted, but check your local service’s current rules before putting them out.
Is there food scrap pickup near me?
Start with your city or county waste-management website. Look for terms such as “food scraps,” “organics,” “compost collection,” and “food waste drop-off.” If there is no municipal option, check local compost haulers and community compost projects, then confirm service for your exact address. A provider’s presence in your city does not necessarily mean it serves every neighborhood.
Examples reported by the Associated Press include Scrap Soils in Detroit; Compost Now in Atlanta, Raleigh, Durham, and Asheville; Compost Co. in Nashville; and Denver Compost Collective. These are examples, not a complete directory. The AP reported that more than 70 Detroit homes and businesses had signed up for Scrap Soils in 2026.

Can I put coffee grounds and eggshells in compost pickup?
Often, yes: local guidance in Milwaukee, Nashville, New York City, Rockville, Alexandria, and Washington, D.C., includes coffee grounds and eggshells. But acceptance lists differ, so follow the instructions for your own pickup or drop-off site rather than assuming a general rule.
Other items are especially likely to vary. New York City says most of its drop-off sites cannot accept meat, fish, bones, dairy, fat, oil, or greasy prepared food. Milwaukee excludes raw meat, tea bags, food packaging, liquids, and several other categories. Do not assume that meat, dairy, tea bags, paper filters, food-soiled paper, or certified compostable packaging are accepted. Remove produce stickers where required; Scrap Soils highlights sticker removal in its customer education.

- Countertop Fit - The countertop compost bin measures 7.2 inches wide and 11.2 inches high, offering a slightly larger capacity while maintaining a compact cylindrical design that fits neatly on your countertop without taking up excessive prep space.
- Durable Build - Made with stainless steel, the composter resists scratching, cracking, and chipping, so it can handle onion skins, coffee grounds, and daily scraps without showing the wear.
- Stylish Design - With a sturdy, sleek design that complements most kitchen decor, the compost bucket with lid looks like it belongs on your counter, not tucked away out of sight. Its clean lines fit right in, whether your style is modern or classic.
- Odor Control - This kitchen compost bin with lid comes with charcoal filters that trap odors naturally, so food scraps can build up for a full week without any bad smell taking over your kitchen, no matter how close you get to trash day.
- Easy Care - Line the bottom of this small compost bin with newspaper or cardboard to absorb liquid, and drain excess moisture from food scraps before adding them. A quick weekly rinse with water, mild soap, or vinegar keeps things smelling fresh.
Check the provider’s current accepted-items list before your first collection. If a material is not explicitly listed, ask the service rather than putting it in the bin and risking contamination.

Pickup brings a collection container or scraps to a scheduled curbside stop; drop-off means you carry scraps to a designated site. Neither is universally available, and a city may offer one without the other. Nashville, New York City, and Rockville document drop-off options; Scrap Soils in Detroit is an example of weekly pickup.

- Review equipment rules: Find out whether the provider supplies a kitchen pail or outdoor cart, what liners are permitted, and whether scraps must be loose or bagged.
- Ask about finished compost: Some programs may make compost available or return it; do not assume that participation includes a share.
What does food scrap pickup cost?
Prices are local examples, not a national rate. The AP reported in 2026 that Scrap Soils household pickup in Detroit started at $15 per month; business service started at $60 per month and varied with volume. Alexandria’s municipal curbside page listed $5 per month or $55 per year after July 1, 2025. Check each provider’s current price, billing period, and terms before signing up.
Some municipal programs and drop-off options are free, while private pickup services may charge. Compare what the fee covers, including container supply, collection frequency, and any limits on volume.

What container do I need?
Ask whether a kitchen container is included before buying one. Alexandria says its starter kit includes a 7-gallon collection container and compostable bags. Rockville recommends carrying scraps to drop-off in a container. If you need a countertop bin, it is only a temporary collection aid; it does not compost food by itself. Check whether your service accepts liners before using them, since rules vary.

In the Detroit example described by the AP, collected scraps go to a composting site, where they become a soil additive. Composting can divert organic material from landfill and return nutrients to soil, but the available information does not establish a measured climate benefit for each household or service.

- Reuse your kitchen scraps and coffee grinds into our kitchen compost bin with the plastic inner pail and handle: Just put this small trash can on your kitchen countertop, throw away the food scraps (such as fruits, vegetables, coffee grounds, tea bags, egg shells, etc.) in it during cooking; 1.3 gallons offers enough space for temporarily collecting your organic kitchen and food waste for several days, without taking up too much space.
- The plastic inner pail comes out easily, and the little handle on the inner pail is thoughtful to make it a breeze to throw kitchen scraps into your compost tumbler outdoors!
- The countertop compost bucket with lid comes with 2 active carbon filters to prevent odor leaking: The charcoal filter blocks odor naturally and effectively, leaving your kitchen smelling fresh. Put the lid on, and it becomes the perfect farmhouse kitchen decor without any unpleasant smells. Tips: The period of use of the carbon filter is about 4 months to 6 months. Please remember to replace it in time.
- Long-lasting kitchen decor will never rust: The plastic inner pail isolates the scraps from contact with the outer metal bucket, so it will be more durable and will not crack, rust, or corrode. The cream beige color and classic farmhouse pattern make it a unique fit for any kitchen, whether rustic, minimal, boho, or country.
- Our kitchen compost bin considers aesthetics and practicality, and this trash can is a high-quality product that will accompany you in your actions of everyday life. This would also make a wonderful conscious gift.
Emily Cassidy, a research associate at Project Drawdown, explained the methane rationale: “Because methane has such a big impact on the climate in a short amount of time, the more we can reduce methane, it is like pulling the emergency brake on climate change,” she said. She also described the value of returning nutrients: “That’s a way that we can see that we’re benefiting the environment, because we’re taking food and then replenishing the ground with those nutrients,” she said. These are general pathway explanations, not a quantified savings claim for a particular pickup program.
What to verify before you enroll
- Check the city or county waste page, then search local compost haulers, community compost projects, and drop-off sites.
- Confirm that the provider serves your exact address and whether it offers pickup, drop-off, or both.
- Get the current price and billing terms, collection schedule, and set-out instructions.
- Check the accepted-items list, container and liner requirements, and whether finished compost is returned or available.
If your city does not collect food scraps, a local drop-off site or community compost project may still be an option. Verify its accepted materials and hours before making a trip.
