People have been filmed kicking or pushing food-delivery robots and opening their compartments to take food in Los Angeles, according to a 2023 report by Futurism. But the report did not establish how many robots were affected or why the incidents happened. Its headline’s suggestion that robot deliveries are “driving” vandalism and theft goes beyond what those accounts and videos can prove.
What happened to the delivery robots?
Futurism’s Sharon Adarlo reported on August 8, 2023, that food-delivery robots were operating in parts of Los Angeles and described incidents attributed to local broadcaster KTLA 5. People were reported kicking or pushing robots and opening their compartments to take food. The story also referenced videos shared on social media.
These are reported examples, not a systematic record of crimes. Futurism said there was “no readily available information on how many bots have been impacted.” The report therefore cannot establish an incident total, how frequently the behavior occurred, or whether it was increasing.

Does the evidence show that robots are causing vandalism or theft?
No. The incidents document reported damage and food-taking, but they do not establish that the introduction of delivery robots caused people to commit those acts. The story does not provide a named, sourced explanation of the perpetrators’ motives. A TikTok poster’s line, “Listen to him scream. No one respects him,” is social-media commentary, not evidence of why the behavior occurred or what the public generally thinks.

A 2024 ROBONOMICS analysis of public commentaries discusses safety concerns, vandalism, theft, and social acceptance around autonomous food-delivery robots. It offers context for understanding public concerns, but it does not count or verify the Los Angeles incidents.
What did the incidents mean for restaurants?
Steve Avila, general manager of Blu Jam Café, described one business’s experience: “We have to remake the food, but luckily we still get reimbursed for that.” His account shows that a disrupted delivery can mean remaking an order, while reimbursement may offset the cost for that restaurant. It is not a survey of restaurants or evidence that all operators reimburse businesses in the same way.

What do Serve Robotics’ reported figures mean?
In the 2023 report, an unnamed Serve Robotics representative said the company was aware of incidents. The figures reported at the time were company claims, not independent measures of vandalism or theft:

The completion-rate and restaurant figures should not be treated as current statistics: both are tied to the company’s statements in 2023. A high delivery completion rate also cannot tell readers how many robots were vandalized, because the report does not define it as an incident measure.

What safeguards are discussed for delivery robots?
A 2026 article in Sustainability discusses consumer perceptions of autonomous delivery services and identifies safeguards considered in the broader context of street robots, including GPS trackers, locks, tampering alarms, and video recording. These are design and risk considerations, not proof that any particular safeguard was used on the robots in the Los Angeles reports or that it would prevent every incident. The article does not provide a rate that can be applied to those cases.
