Before folding a phone, check that the inner display and hinge are clear; keep sharp objects and hard pressure away from the flexible screen; and don’t remove or replace its factory-installed protector unless the manufacturer directs you to. Foldables differ in construction, resistance ratings, and service rules, so use the instructions for your exact model.
What should I check before I fold my phone?
Check both screen halves and the hinge area for grit, crumbs, or anything else caught between them. A small hard particle can scratch or puncture the inner display, while a card, key, or coin can obstruct the closing motion.
Google advises keeping sand, dirt, and other particles away from the Pixel 11 Pro Fold’s display and hinge. Samsung’s guidance says, “Before folding the phone, make sure there are no objects such as cards, coins, or keys in between the screens.” Motorola gives similar advice for Razr phones, including checking the hinge area.

- Look over the inner screen and hinge before closing.
- Keep cards, keys, coins, and other hard objects out of the space between the screens.
- If the phone does not close normally, stop and check for an obstruction instead of pressing it shut.
How should I handle the inner display and hinge?
Keep sharp objects and pressure away from the screen
A foldable’s inner display should not be treated like conventional cover glass. Avoid touching it with fingernails, pens, keys, or other sharp objects, and do not poke or press hard on the crease. Google notes that flexible screens are softer than traditional phone screens; Samsung and Motorola also warn against pressure or sharp-object contact.

Fold it only as the model is designed to fold
Do not force a hinge or fold a phone backward unless its manufacturer specifically says that is supported. Samsung warns Galaxy foldable owners against folding the device backward and applying excessive force. That is model-specific guidance, not a rule that establishes how every foldable hinge works. If folding feels obstructed, stop and inspect for debris or an object before trying again.
Can I remove the screen protector on a foldable phone?
Do not casually peel off the factory-installed inner-screen film, and do not add an unapproved third-party protector. The film and flexible display are part of a model-specific design. Google says not to remove the preinstalled protector or apply a third-party one. Samsung does not recommend user removal and directs owners to authorized service for replacement; Motorola warns that third-party films can affect operation or damage the screen.

If the protector lifts, bubbles, or is damaged, contact the manufacturer or an authorized service provider for the correct replacement procedure. Samsung’s Philippines support page cautions that arbitrarily attaching or removing the film may damage the panel. The approved service route and policy can vary by model and region.

Follow the cleaning instructions for your exact device. The manufacturers’ guidance supports gentle cleaning with a soft cloth, but details are not identical across models.

- Google recommends a soft, lint-free cloth and warns against solvents and abrasive materials.
- Samsung advises using a soft, dry cloth around the hinge.
- Motorola recommends a dry, soft cloth, cautions against rough cloths, and says not to spray cleaners directly on the display.
A soft, lint-free microfiber cloth is a practical option when it matches your manufacturer’s directions. Avoid abrasive materials and direct sprays unless your device’s own guide explicitly permits them.

No single resistance claim applies to all foldables. Check the rating and limitations for the exact model rather than assuming the phone is impervious to dust, sand, or water. Samsung’s support guidance lists different ratings across its models. Google says the Pixel 11 Pro Fold’s IP68 protection is not permanent and may diminish with wear, repair, or damage.

Samsung lists up to 5 feet of fresh water for up to 30 minutes for named IP48 models; that is a model-specific manufacturer rating, not a general guarantee for foldable phones. Resistance ratings also do not make it sensible to expose a device unnecessarily to sand or water. Consult the model’s guide for its conditions and limits.
Which instructions should take priority?
Use the manual and support guidance for your exact model and region, especially for protector replacement, cleaning, resistance limits, and repair. Samsung, Google, and Motorola publish model-specific care instructions, and their recommendations should not be generalized across every foldable.
