The Focal Mu-so Hekla is a premium, single-cabinet system for TV, films, games, and music, with Dolby Atmos support and streaming built in. It is a strong option if you want an expansive presentation without assembling separate speakers—but its $3,599–$3,600 reported US price, 100 cm width, and spatial processing that TechRadar says cannot be fully disabled for stereo make it a poor fit for some rooms and listeners.
What is the Focal Mu-so Hekla?
Focal positions the Mu-so Hekla as an “Immersive All-in-One System,” rather than simply calling it a soundbar. Its low, wide cabinet connects to a TV and combines amplification, drivers, Dolby Atmos processing, and network audio in one unit. Its shape and TV connection resemble a soundbar, but Focal’s product positioning emphasizes a broader all-in-one system concept.
Focal says the Hekla was developed collaboratively by Focal and Naim engineers. The company specifies 15 drivers and 660 W of amplification. What Hi-Fi? also describes 15 drivers and individual Class D amplification, while the 660 W figure remains a stated total output rather than an independent measurement. Focal lists a 30 Hz–20 kHz frequency response at ±3 dB and peak SPL of 108 dB at one metre; these are manufacturer specifications, not independently verified results in the cited reviews. How does it sound for films, TV, games, and music?
TechRadar’s October 1, 2026 review describes a detailed, spacious sound, articulate voices, clear dialogue, substantial dynamics, and controlled, enjoyable bass. What Hi-Fi?’s June 15, 2026 review also praised its performance with movies and music. Those are the reviewers’ listening assessments, not laboratory test results.
#1 Best Overall
- Exceptional Sound Quality: Aluminum/Magnesium "M" dome speakers deliver precise, clear, and immersive hi-fi sound engineered for audiophiles.
- Handcrafted in France: Expertly made in Focal's French workshops, ensuring superior craftsmanship and attention to detail.
- Luxurious Comfort: Genuine leather headband, breathable braided textile, and memory foam earpads provide unmatched comfort and insulation for extended listening sessions.
- Lightweight & Ergonomic: Magnesium yoke ensures a lightweight, perfectly balanced fit, ideal for music lovers on the go.
- Timeless Design: Inspired by azurite, the deep blue finish combines modern elegance with Focal’s signature aesthetic, making Azurys both stylish and functional.
The central appeal is that the Hekla aims to create an enveloping presentation from one cabinet. Focal’s app offers Dolby and Sphere listening modes, and its ADAPT feature uses room measurements entered in the app to tune the system to the space. Focal describes ADAPT as Adaptive Acoustic Personal Tuning; the product page does not establish that it replaces careful placement or guarantees a particular result in every room.
The important stereo caveat
TechRadar reports that the Hekla applies spatial processing to two-channel sources even when “stereo” is selected, and that it does not provide a way to turn that effect fully off. If you want conventional, unprocessed stereo playback for music, that behavior is a significant reason to audition the Hekla before buying. A Focal representative told What Hi-Fi? at the launch showcase that the company wanted to preserve its hi-fi signature for music as well as deliver a home-cinema experience; that stated intention does not negate TechRadar’s reported listening-mode limitation.
Rank #2
- Premium Sound: 40mm Aluminum/Magnesium "M" dome drivers deliver warm, detailed, and dynamic sound, offering a pure hi-fi experience.
- Handcrafted in France: Precision-engineered in Focal's French workshops, ensuring exceptional craftsmanship and acoustics.
- Comfort for Extended Listening: Lightweight magnesium yoke and memory foam ear cushions ensure hours of comfortable, immersive listening.
- Elegant, Earthy Design: Timeless brown tones inspired by the Hadean era create a sophisticated, natural aesthetic.
- Running-In Period: Achieve full performance with a recommended running-in period, stabilizing the sound for the best possible experience.
Connections and format support
The Hekla covers common TV and network setups: HDMI eARC with CEC, optical TOSLINK, Ethernet, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.1, and an RCA subwoofer output. Focal’s specification lists SBC and AAC Bluetooth codecs, plus support for Dolby multichannel formats subject to format-specific limits. Check the official specification sheet for the detailed format and signal limitations before relying on a particular source-device configuration. Focal and Naim Mu-so Hekla specification sheet
What Hi-Fi? notes that the system has no built-in phono stage. If a turntable is part of your setup, you will need phono amplification elsewhere in the signal chain. The RCA subwoofer output offers an expansion option, but TechRadar notes that a subwoofer and rear speakers are not included.
Rank #3
- Neutral, Detailed Sound – 5" Slatefiber woofer and 1" aluminum tweeter deliver accurate, balanced monitoring at any volume.
- Flexible Connections – TRS, XLR, and RCA inputs let you connect up to three audio sources.
- Customizable Tuning – Adjustable LF and HF shelving plus sensitivity control for room and workflow adaptation.
- High Output, Low Distortion – 35W LF and 25W HF Class D amps deliver up to 101dB SPL peak at 1m.
- Studio-Ready Build – MDF cabinet with black vinyl finish, laminar port, and inserts for wall mounting.
Size, placement, and setup
At 100 cm wide, 29.5 cm deep, 11.8 cm tall, and 15.5 kg, the Hekla is substantial for a single-cabinet system. Measure the furniture surface and check the TV’s feet, stand, and screen clearance before ordering. What Hi-Fi? says its depth, width, weight, and illuminated dial can complicate placement with a TV, so the cabinet should not be treated as a small bar that will fit any shelf.
Focal’s ADAPT tuning depends on room measurements entered in the app. The Focal & Naim app also provides the listening modes. The available specifications do not establish a prescribed minimum clearance or a universal setup result, so confirm the intended position and access to the rear connections in your own room.
Rank #4
- Exclusive cone technology offering acoustic transparency and excellent dynamics.
- Precision and neutrality.
- Total control over the audio spectrum.
- Excellent isolation and optimal comfort.
- Compact, rigid carrying case.

Mu-so Hekla versus a premium Atmos soundbar or component system
| Consideration | Mu-so Hekla | Conventional premium Atmos soundbar | Component system |
|---|---|---|---|
| Setup and footprint | One substantial cabinet; 100 cm wide, 29.5 cm deep, 11.8 cm high, and 15.5 kg (Focal specification). | Usually a single bar, but exact dimensions and included components depend on the model; no direct model comparison is established here. | Separate speakers and components require more placement and setup decisions. |
| Spatial presentation and stereo | Reviewers praise its spacious presentation; TechRadar reports that two-channel stereo cannot be played with the spatial effect fully disabled. | Processing and stereo options vary by model; no particular alternative is assessed here. | Offers more choice over components and signal path; behavior depends on the selected equipment. |
| Inputs and streaming | HDMI eARC, optical, Ethernet, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.1, and RCA subwoofer output; Focal lists SBC/AAC Bluetooth codecs. | Inputs and streaming features vary by model; no model-specific comparison is established here. | Can be configured around chosen sources and components, with compatibility depending on those choices. |
| Expansion | RCA subwoofer output; subwoofer and rear speakers are not included, according to TechRadar. | Expansion options vary; none are established for a specific competing product here. | Separate components make upgrades more modular, though the system must be selected and matched. |
| Price and access | Reviewers reported £2,999 / US$3,599 / AU$6,499 (TechRadar, October 1, 2026) and £3,000 / US$3,600 (What Hi-Fi?, June 15, 2026); What Hi-Fi? says authorized-dealer sales. | Depends on model and region; no direct price comparison is established here. | Depends on the chosen components; no directly comparable package price is established here. |
This comparison is about system design, not a claim that every premium soundbar or component setup performs alike. The Hekla’s advantage is a consolidated, high-end package; separate components make it easier to choose an upgrade path and shape the system around particular stereo or speaker preferences.
Who should buy the Focal Mu-so Hekla?
It makes sense if
- You want one main cabinet for TV, films, games, and streamed music, with Dolby Atmos and network connectivity built in.
- You have enough sturdy furniture space for its dimensions and can check TV clearance before purchase.
- You value the immersive, detailed presentation and clear dialogue reported by the reviewers, and are comfortable with the reported stereo processing behavior.
- You prefer an integrated system over selecting and placing separate speakers, while retaining the option to connect a subwoofer.
Look elsewhere if
- Your available shelf or TV stand cannot comfortably accommodate a 100 cm-wide, 29.5 cm-deep, 15.5 kg unit.
- You require fully unprocessed two-channel playback.
- You want a built-in phono stage or a component-style system with a more modular upgrade route.
- You expect rear speakers or a subwoofer to be included in the purchase.
Verdict
The Focal Mu-so Hekla is an ambitious all-in-one system for buyers who want a spacious home-cinema presentation and music playback without building a separate-speaker setup. The reviews give it strong marks for detail, dialogue, dynamics, and immersion, but the reported price is high, its cabinet needs real space, and TechRadar’s finding about unavoidable stereo spatial processing matters to music purists. If those trade-offs fit your room and listening preferences, audition it through an authorized dealer before committing.
